Government on a Neighboring Planet

(808.1) 72:0.1 BY PERMISSION of Lanaforge and with the approval of the Most Highs of Edentia, I am authorized to narrate something of the social, moral, and political life of the most advanced human race living on a not far-distant planet belonging to the Satania system.

(808.2) 72:0.2 Of all the Satania worlds which became isolated because of participation in the Lucifer rebellion, this planet has experienced a history most like that of Urantia. The similarity of the two spheres undoubtedly explains why permission to make this extraordinary presentation was granted, for it is most unusual for the system rulers to consent to the narration on one planet of the affairs of another.

(808.3) 72:0.3 This planet, like Urantia, was led astray by the disloyalty of its Planetary Prince in connection with the Lucifer rebellion. It received a Material Son shortly after Adam came to Urantia, and this Son also defaulted, leaving the sphere isolated, since a Magisterial Son has never been bestowed upon its mortal races.

1. The Continental Nation

(808.4) 72:1.1 Notwithstanding all these planetary handicaps a very superior civilization is evolving on an isolated continent about the size of Australia. This nation numbers about 140 million. Its people are a mixed race, predominantly blue and yellow, having a slightly greater proportion of violet than the so-called white race of Urantia. These different races are not yet fully blended, but they fraternize and socialize very acceptably. The average length of life on this continent is now ninety years, fifteen per cent higher than that of any other people on the planet.

(808.5) 72:1.2 The industrial mechanism of this nation enjoys a certain great advantage derived from the unique topography of the continent. The high mountains, on which heavy rains fall eight months in the year, are situated at the very center of the country. This natural arrangement favors the utilization of water power and greatly facilitates the irrigation of the more arid western quarter of the continent.

(808.6) 72:1.3 These people are self-sustaining, that is, they can live indefinitely without importing anything from the surrounding nations. Their natural resources are replete, and by scientific techniques they have learned how to compensate for their deficiencies in the essentials of life. They enjoy a brisk domestic commerce but have little foreign trade owing to the universal hostility of their less progressive neighbors.

(808.7) 72:1.4 This continental nation, in general, followed the evolutionary trend of the planet: The development from the tribal stage to the appearance of strong rulers and kings occupied thousands of years. The unconditional monarchs were succeeded by many different orders of government — abortive republics, communal states, and dictators came and went in endless profusion. This growth continued until about five hundred years ago when, during a politically fermenting period, one of the nation’s powerful dictator-triumvirs had a change of heart. He volunteered to abdicate upon condition that one of the other rulers, the baser of the remaining two, also vacate his dictatorship. Thus was the sovereignty of the continent placed in the hands of one ruler. The unified state progressed under strong monarchial rule for over one hundred years, during which there evolved a masterful charter of liberty.

(809.1) 72:1.5 The subsequent transition from monarchy to a representative form of government was gradual, the kings remaining as mere social or sentimental figureheads, finally disappearing when the male line of descent ran out. The present republic has now been in existence just two hundred years, during which time there has been a continuous progression toward the governmental techniques about to be narrated, the last developments in industrial and political realms having been made within the past decade.

(421.4) 38:6.1 After the second millennium of sojourn at seraphic headquarters the seraphim are organized under chiefs into groups of twelve (12 pairs, 24 seraphim), and twelve such groups constitute a company (144 pairs, 288 seraphim), which is commanded by a leader. Twelve companies under a commander constitute a battalion (1,728 pairs or 3,456 seraphim), and twelve battalions under a director equal a seraphic unit (20,736 pairs or 41,472 individuals), while twelve units, subject to the command of a supervisor, constitute a legion numbering 248,832 pairs or 497,664 individuals. Jesus alluded to such a group of angels that night in the garden of Gethsemane when he said: “I can even now ask my Father, and he will presently give me more than twelve legions of angels.”

(421.5) 38:6.2 Twelve legions of angels comprise a host numbering 2,985,984 pairs or 5,971,968 individuals, and twelve such hosts (35,831,808 pairs or 71,663,616 individuals) make up the largest operating organization of seraphim, an angelic army. A seraphic host is commanded by an archangel or by some other personality of co-ordinate status, while the angelic armies are directed by the Brilliant Evening Stars or by other immediate lieutenants of Gabriel. And Gabriel is the “supreme commander of the armies of heaven,” the chief executive of the Sovereign of Nebadon, “the Lord God of hosts.”

(421.6) 38:6.3 Though serving under the direct supervision of the Infinite Spirit as personalized on Salvington, since the bestowal of Michael on Urantia, seraphim and all other local universe orders have become subject to the sovereignty of the Master Son. Even when Michael was born of the flesh on Urantia, there issued the superuniverse broadcast to all Nebadon which proclaimed, “And let all the angels worship him.” All ranks of angels are subject to his sovereignty; they are a part of that group which has been denominated “his mighty angels.”

Os fãs de Tolkien, com a característica curiosidade extensiva a todos os cantos da obra, não deixam de reparar, após apenas alguma diminuição na paixão que a obra desperta de imediato, a (aparentemente) estranha ausência de religiões nos seus livros.

Ou, pelo menos, assim ocorre com os que não chegaram às obras atrás de, somente, sons e luzes. A estranheza somente aumenta quanto mais se lê, e não falo somente de quantos mais textos ou livros são lidos, mas especialmente de quanto melhor se lê. Pois é evidente, após pouca atenção dispensada, a presença profunda, essencial e generalizada de mística e religiosidade por toda a obra. Seja no mundo criado, em suas causas profundas, sentidos básicos e história, quanto no texto, nos motivos fundamentais que se seguem. Por isso a pergunta se torna de maior importância. Por que foi tão importante, para Tolkien, excluir de sua obra religiões organizadas?

Ou melhor, por que excluir formalmente, diretamente, a religião (e não se enganem, esta é a católica) que pode ser tão claramente sentida? Há uma resposta simples, eficiente e correta para isto, e não há motivos para duvidar dela. Tolkien criticava, na fantasia medieval, a presença aberta do cristianismo. Para ele parecia um erro mortal. As razões para tal não são difíceis de imaginar. Possivelmente, ele acreditava que a presença de Verdades Reveladas amarrava a subcriação dos autores, cuja percepção intuitiva, adivinhada e complementada da Verdade era (e é) a essência básica da fantasia. Uma história verdadeira limitaria a criação de uma história alternativa. E é fácil entender que Tolkien não tivesse nenhuma intenção de, ao excluir a religião Verdadeira (de acordo com sua fé) incluir ou criar qualquer outra.

Entretanto, a religião Verdadeira está realmente fora do mundo secundário de Tolkien? A leitura de alguns dos mais famosos e melhores textos de Tolkien não permite essa conclusão. Se o cristianismo não está incluso nos escritos de Tolkien, ele está inscrito em seu mundo. Não no período que Tolkien descreve, mas no seguinte. Tolkien descreve sua obra como período histórico imaginário, como passado criado deste mesmo mundo, e deste mesmo presente. Presente esse que inclui necessariamente a vinda, há dois mil anos, de Cristo. Escrevendo sobre um período passado há mais ou menos, em suas próprias palavras, seis ou oito mil anos antes de agora, ele pôde incluir Cristo sem ter que escrever sobre ele. Liberando sua criação de amarras, mas a mantendo no mesmo sistema de suas crenças sinceras: a própria formalização de sua tese sobre a sub-criação mitológica. Qualquer dúvida quanto à presença futura de Cristo no mundo secundário de Tolkien não resiste à leitura do Athrabeth Finrod ah Andreth, presente no History of Middle-earth X, Morgoth’s Ring.

Mas tais explicações não são o objetivo deste texto. Estas conclusões são bastante claras e eu não as formulei, somente extraí de alguns dos mais conhecidos textos de Tolkien, mais em sentido de introdução que de revelação. Tampouco pretendo a partir de agora elaborar uma tese inovadora. Minha intenção é, a partir de uma frase, contida em uma das cartas direcionadas aos fãs, demonstrar como, interna e externamente ao mundo sub-criado, a religião organizada não é fundamental, mas sim produto histórico (embora não social), e está ligada aos mais profundos motivos do Legendário. Como pôde, portanto, o mundo secundário funcionar como sistema, auto-sustentado, e progressão de acontecimentos, e mais, como sistema em movimento, embora este seja melhor considerado do ponto de vista artístico que, digamos, sociológico.

Tolkien afirma que os hobbits tem algo como uma religião natural. Uma certa percepção intuitiva, não revelada ou deduzida pela razão, do que é certo, ou de como o mundo é de fato. Não é segredo pra ninguém que Tolkien tinha um grande conhecimento de escolástica (medieval, pelo menos, talvez moderna também). O tomismo (nota #1) divide a Verdade universal em Divina, Eterna e Natural, sendo estas duas últimas mundanas, e, portanto poderiam ser percebidas ou deduzidas sem o conhecimento da Palavra. E de certa forma mesmo o Divino poderia ser algo sentido, embora não descoberto. Dessa forma, há um relato de um missionário espanhol entre os índios no século XVI que afirma que os índios eram tão inocentes e sinceros em suas práticas idólatras que deveria ser visto ali uma genuína fé mal direcionada. Acredito que Tolkien segue esta forma de pensamento. Os hobbits percebiam de forma fraturada Eru, mas na essência era puro. Pelo Mythopoeia (nota #2) se depreende que essa era a concepção de Tolkien a respeito da religião humana também, adaptada e decorada com a ação criativa humana.

Creio que isso explica como a religião é em geral tratada por toda a obra. Sendo o Divino e o Natural perceptível, era possível para os povos de Arda viverem de forma correta por sua intuição, não precisando de Revelações. Aliás, isso é corroborado pelo Conto de Adanel, onde o Divino é diretamente alcançado no interior do ser enquanto os homens eram impolutos, mas esse Divino não instrui amplamente os humanos, sendo mais uma supraconsciência que uma fonte de conhecimento. Esse se cala à medida que os homens se afastam da vida correta. Não acredito que os elfos tenham tido algo tão direto, acreditando que a tal Voz não seja uma metáfora, mas talvez nunca tenha precisado. Além de mais fortemente conscientes da própria espiritualidade, os elfos estiveram durante a maior parte do tempo sob a tutela direta ou indireta dos Valar. Considerando as coincidências entre os Ainur e os elfos (mesmo ritmo temporal, maior afinidade dos Valar com os elfos, etc.) eu imagino que Eru tenha criado os elfos com isso em mente. A regência dos Valar era tanto espiritual quanto natural, e eles serviram como instrutores dos elfos em questões divinas. Talvez os humanos, com sua vida natural rápida, não precisassem de certeza sobre estas questões, antes do seu destino final. Talvez pudessem somente se valer da sua intuição e da Voz.

Imagino que seja por isso que não exista religião ordenada, que apresente uma cosmogonia e sistema universal ou código de conduta definido, ou culto no qual se demonstrasse um respeito ou temor ritualizado. Se os fundamentos da universo fossem perceptíveis por si e a conduta ideal alcançada sem direcionamento, ou seja, se a Existência fosse respeitada e seguida na essência, não havia a necessidade de uma instrução Revelada. Essa só se configura para os humanos, e através da Queda. A partir daí a Cura dos homens só pode se dar pela redenção dele mesmo, ao mesmo tempo em que pela intervenção de Deus. Além da questão puramente mística da Dupla Natureza de Cristo, também a Palavra é revelada algumas vezes, compondo o que seriam os Evangelhos, e criado um culto baseado na verdade, subvertendo e reparando os danos do culto primordial a Morgoth. Uma Igreja nas mesmas bases formais da morgothiana, mas inversa no sentido, santificada, libertando os homens do peso da mácula original. Eu imagino que esta seja a razão da existência de uma Igreja hoje (o hoje mítico, óbvio). A pergunta inicial estaria invertida, se for assim. Por que existem religiões? Acredito que o Fim do Drama seria a resposta. Imagino mesmo que a Cura completa só se daria pela inversão total da Queda no Fim, a conversão de todos os homens (ou então só haveria Cura e vida eterna para os santos).

Dessa forma Tolkien funde, de forma bela e auto-explicativa, teologia, com suas bases estáticas, com história a nível humano, pequenas vidas vividas dentro de um mundo dado, e mitologia, com a progressão de um Drama que se compõe estágio a estágio, em direção ao fim que unifica e justifica o todo. Argumento, principalmente, dentro da Obra escrita por duas razões básicas. Por considerar que descobrir a razão em Tolkien externo é procurar agulha em palheiro. Segundo, porque acho que Tolkien não só refletiu suas preocupações e exerceu uma subcriação em sentido estrito, mas também porque nela estas se apresentam de forma fechada e coerente, com um sentido. Não necessariamente na criação em si é desta forma.

4. Early Days of the One Hundred

(743.10) 66:4.1 The arrival of the Prince’s staff created a profound impression. While it required almost a thousand years for the news to spread abroad, those tribes near the Mesopotamian headquarters were tremendously influenced by the teachings and conduct of the one hundred new sojourners on Urantia. And much of your subsequent mythology grew out of the garbled legends of these early days when these members of the Prince’s staff were repersonalized on Urantia as supermen.

(744.1) 66:4.2 The serious obstacle to the good influence of such extraplanetary teachers is the tendency of mortals to regard them as gods, but aside from the technique of their appearance on earth the Caligastia one hundred — fifty men and fifty women — did not resort to supernatural methods nor superhuman manipulations.

(744.2) 66:4.3 But the corporeal staff were nonetheless superhuman. They began their mission on Urantia as extraordinary threefold beings:

(744.3) 66:4.4 1. They were corporeal and relatively human, for they embodied the actual life plasm of one of the human races, the Andonic life plasm of Urantia.

(744.4) 66:4.5 These one hundred members of the Prince’s staff were divided equally as to sex and in accordance with their previous mortal status. Each person of this group was capable of becoming coparental to some new order of physical being, but they had been carefully instructed to resort to parenthood only under certain conditions. It is customary for the corporeal staff of a Planetary Prince to procreate their successors sometime prior to retiring from special planetary service. Usually this is at, or shortly after, the time of the arrival of the Planetary Adam and Eve.

(744.5) 66:4.6 These special beings therefore had little or no idea as to what type of material creature would be produced by their sexual union. And they never did know; before the time for such a step in the prosecution of their world work the entire regime was upset by rebellion, and those who later functioned in the parental role had been isolated from the life currents of the system.

(744.6) 66:4.7 In skin color and language these materialized members of Caligastia’s staff followed the Andonic race. They partook of food as did the mortals of the realm with this difference: The re-created bodies of this group were fully satisfied by a nonflesh diet. This was one of the considerations which determined their residence in a warm region abounding in fruits and nuts. The practice of subsisting on a nonflesh diet dates from the times of the Caligastia one hundred, for this custom spread near and far to affect the eating habits of many surrounding tribes, groups of origin in the once exclusively meat-eating evolutionary races.

(744.7) 66:4.8 2. The one hundred were material but superhuman beings, having been reconstituted on Urantia as unique men and women of a high and special order.

(744.8) 66:4.9 This group, while enjoying provisional citizenship on Jerusem, were as yet unfused with their Thought Adjusters; and when they volunteered and were accepted for planetary service in liaison with the descending orders of sonship, their Adjusters were detached. But these Jerusemites were superhuman beings — they possessed souls of ascendant growth. During the mortal life in the flesh the soul is of embryonic estate; it is born (resurrected) in the morontia life and experiences growth through the successive morontia worlds. And the souls of the Caligastia one hundred had thus expanded through the progressive experiences of the seven mansion worlds to citizenship status on Jerusem.

(744.9) 66:4.10 In conformity to their instructions the staff did not engage in sexual reproduction, but they did painstakingly study their personal constitutions, and they carefully explored every imaginable phase of intellectual (mind) and morontia (soul) liaison. And it was during the thirty-third year of their sojourn in Dalamatia, long before the wall was completed, that number two and number seven of the Danite group accidentally discovered a phenomenon attendant upon the liaison of their morontia selves (supposedly nonsexual and nonmaterial); and the result of this adventure proved to be the first of the primary midway creatures. This new being was wholly visible to the planetary staff and to their celestial associates but was not visible to the men and women of the various human tribes. Upon authority of the Planetary Prince the entire corporeal staff undertook the production of similar beings, and all were successful, following the instructions of the pioneer Danite pair. Thus did the Prince’s staff eventually bring into being the original corps of 50,000 primary midwayers.

(745.1) 66:4.11 These mid-type creatures were of great service in carrying on the affairs of the world’s headquarters. They were invisible to human beings, but the primitive sojourners at Dalamatia were taught about these unseen semispirits, and for ages they constituted the sum total of the spirit world to these evolving mortals.

(745.2) 66:4.12 3. The Caligastia one hundred were personally immortal, or undying. There circulated through their material forms the antidotal complements of the life currents of the system; and had they not lost contact with the life circuits through rebellion, they would have lived on indefinitely until the arrival of a subsequent Son of God, or until their sometime later release to resume the interrupted journey to Havona and Paradise.

(745.3) 66:4.13 These antidotal complements of the Satania life currents were derived from the fruit of the tree of life, a shrub of Edentia which was sent to Urantia by the Most Highs of Norlatiadek at the time of Caligastia’s arrival. In the days of Dalamatia this tree grew in the central courtyard of the temple of the unseen Father, and it was the fruit of the tree of life that enabled the material and otherwise mortal beings of the Prince’s staff to live on indefinitely as long as they had access to it.

(745.4) 66:4.14 While of no value to the evolutionary races, this supersustenance was quite sufficient to confer continuous life upon the Caligastia one hundred and also upon the one hundred modified Andonites who were associated with them.

(745.5) 66:4.15 It should be explained in this connection that, at the time the one hundred Andonites contributed their human germ plasm to the members of the Prince’s staff, the Life Carriers introduced into their mortal bodies the complement of the system circuits; and thus were they enabled to live on concurrently with the staff, century after century, in defiance of physical death.

(745.6) 66:4.16 Eventually the one hundred Andonites were made aware of their contribution to the new forms of their superiors, and these same one hundred children of the Andon tribes were kept at headquarters as the personal attendants of the Prince’s corporeal staff.

5. Organization of the One Hundred

(745.7) 66:5.1 The one hundred were organized for service in ten autonomous councils of ten members each. When two or more of these ten councils met in joint session, such liaison gatherings were presided over by Daligastia. These ten groups were constituted as follows:

(745.8) 66:5.2 1. The council on food and material welfare. This group was presided over by Ang. Food, water, clothes, and the material advancement of the human species were fostered by this able corps. They taught well digging, spring control, and irrigation. They taught those from the higher altitudes and from the north improved methods of treating skins for use as clothing, and weaving was later introduced by the teachers of art and science.

(746.1) 66:5.3 Great advances were made in methods of food storage. Food was preserved by cooking, drying, and smoking; it thus became the earliest property. Man was taught to provide for the hazards of famine, which periodically decimated the world.

(746.2) 66:5.4 2. The board of animal domestication and utilization. This council was dedicated to the task of selecting and breeding those animals best adapted to help human beings in bearing burdens and transporting themselves, to supply food, and later on to be of service in the cultivation of the soil. This able corps was directed by Bon.

(746.3) 66:5.5 Several types of useful animals, now extinct, were tamed, together with some that have continued as domesticated animals to the present day. Man had long lived with the dog, and the blue man had already been successful in taming the elephant. The cow was so improved by careful breeding as to become a valuable source of food; butter and cheese became common articles of human diet. Men were taught to use oxen for burden bearing, but the horse was not domesticated until a later date. The members of this corps first taught men to use the wheel for the facilitation of traction.

(746.4) 66:5.6 It was in these days that carrier pigeons were first used, being taken on long journeys for the purpose of sending messages or calls for help. Bon’s group were successful in training the great fandors as passenger birds, but they became extinct more than thirty thousand years ago.

(746.5) 66:5.7 3. The advisers regarding the conquest of predatory animals. It was not enough that early man should try to domesticate certain animals, but he must also learn how to protect himself from destruction by the remainder of the hostile animal world. This group was captained by Dan.

(746.6) 66:5.8 The purpose of an ancient city wall was to protect against ferocious beasts as well as to prevent surprise attacks by hostile humans. Those living without the walls and in the forest were dependent on tree dwellings, stone huts, and the maintenance of night fires. It was therefore very natural that these teachers should devote much time to instructing their pupils in the improvement of human dwellings. By employing improved techniques and by the use of traps, great progress was made in animal subjugation.

(746.7) 66:5.9 4. The faculty on dissemination and conservation of knowledge. This group organized and directed the purely educational endeavors of those early ages. It was presided over by Fad. The educational methods of Fad consisted in supervision of employment accompanied by instruction in improved methods of labor. Fad formulated the first alphabet and introduced a writing system. This alphabet contained twenty-five characters. For writing material these early peoples utilized tree barks, clay tablets, stone slabs, a form of parchment made of hammered hides, and a crude form of paperlike material made from wasps’ nests. The Dalamatia library, destroyed soon after the Caligastia disaffection, comprised more than two million separate records and was known as the “house of Fad.”

(746.8) 66:5.10 The blue man was partial to alphabet writing and made the greatest progress along such lines. The red man preferred pictorial writing, while the yellow races drifted into the use of symbols for words and ideas, much like those they now employ. But the alphabet and much more was subsequently lost to the world during the confusion attendant upon rebellion. The Caligastia defection destroyed the hope of the world for a universal language, at least for untold ages.

(747.1) 66:5.11 5. The commission on industry and trade. This council was employed in fostering industry within the tribes and in promoting trade between the various peace groups. Its leader was Nod. Every form of primitive manufacture was encouraged by this corps. They contributed directly to the elevation of standards of living by providing many new commodities to attract the fancy of primitive men. They greatly expanded the trade in the improved salt produced by the council on science and art.

(747.2) 66:5.12 It was among these enlightened groups educated in the Dalamatia schools that the first commercial credit was practiced. From a central exchange of credits they secured tokens which were accepted in lieu of the actual objects of barter. The world did not improve upon these business methods for hundreds of thousands of years.

(747.3) 66:5.13 6. The college of revealed religion. This body was slow in functioning. Urantia civilization was literally forged out between the anvil of necessity and the hammers of fear. But this group had made considerable progress in their attempt to substitute Creator fear for creature fear (ghost worship) before their labors were interrupted by the later confusion attendant upon the secession upheaval. The head of this council was Hap.

(747.4) 66:5.14 None of the Prince’s staff would present revelation to complicate evolution; they presented revelation only as the climax of their exhaustion of the forces of evolution. But Hap did yield to the desire of the inhabitants of the city for the establishment of a form of religious service. His group provided the Dalamatians with the seven chants of worship and also gave them the daily praise-phrase and eventually taught them “the Father’s prayer,” which was:

(747.5) 66:5.15 “Father of all, whose Son we honor, look down upon us with favor. Deliver us from the fear of all save you. Make us a pleasure to our divine teachers and forever put truth on our lips. Deliver us from violence and anger; give us respect for our elders and that which belongs to our neighbors. Give us this season green pastures and fruitful flocks to gladden our hearts. We pray for the hastening of the coming of the promised uplifter, and we would do your will on this world as others do on worlds beyond.”

(747.6) 66:5.16 Although the Prince’s staff were limited to natural means and ordinary methods of race improvement, they held out the promise of the Adamic gift of a new race as the goal of subsequent evolutionary growth upon the attainment of the height of biologic development.

(747.7) 66:5.17 7. The guardians of health and life. This council was concerned with the introduction of sanitation and the promotion of primitive hygiene and was led by Lut.

(747.8) 66:5.18 Its members taught much that was lost during the confusion of subsequent ages, never to be rediscovered until the twentieth century. They taught mankind that cooking, boiling and roasting, was a means of avoiding sickness; also that such cooking greatly reduced infant mortality and facilitated early weaning.

(747.9) 66:5.19 Many of the early teachings of Lut’s guardians of health persisted among the tribes of earth on down to the days of Moses, even though they became much garbled and were greatly changed.

(748.1) 66:5.20 The great obstacle in the way of promoting hygiene among these ignorant peoples consisted in the fact that the real causes of many diseases were too small to be seen by the naked eye, and also because they all held fire in superstitious regard. It required thousands of years to persuade them to burn refuse. In the meantime they were urged to bury their decaying rubbish. The great sanitary advance of this epoch came from the dissemination of knowledge regarding the health-giving and disease-destroying properties of sunlight.

(748.2) 66:5.21 Before the Prince’s arrival, bathing had been an exclusively religious ceremonial. It was indeed difficult to persuade primitive men to wash their bodies as a health practice. Lut finally induced the religious teachers to include cleansing with water as a part of the purification ceremonies to be practiced in connection with the noontime devotions, once a week, in the worship of the Father of all.

(748.3) 66:5.22 These guardians of health also sought to introduce handshaking in substitution for saliva exchange or blood drinking as a seal of personal friendship and as a token of group loyalty. But when out from under the compelling pressure of the teachings of their superior leaders, these primitive peoples were not slow in reverting to their former health-destroying and disease-breeding practices of ignorance and superstition.

(748.4) 66:5.23 8. The planetary council on art and science. This corps did much to improve the industrial technique of early man and to elevate his concepts of beauty. Their leader was Mek.

(748.5) 66:5.24 Art and science were at a low ebb throughout the world, but the rudiments of physics and chemistry were taught the Dalamatians. Pottery was advanced, decorative arts were all improved, and the ideals of human beauty were greatly enhanced. But music made little progress until after the arrival of the violet race.

(748.6) 66:5.25 These primitive men would not consent to experiment with steam power, notwithstanding the repeated urgings of their teachers; never could they overcome their great fear of the explosive power of confined steam. They were, however, finally persuaded to work with metals and fire, although a piece of red-hot metal was a terrorizing object to early man.

(748.7) 66:5.26 Mek did a great deal to advance the culture of the Andonites and to improve the art of the blue man. A blend of the blue man with the Andon stock produced an artistically gifted type, and many of them became master sculptors. They did not work in stone or marble, but their works of clay, hardened by baking, adorned the gardens of Dalamatia.

(748.8) 66:5.27 Great progress was made in the home arts, most of which were lost in the long and dark ages of rebellion, never to be rediscovered until modern times.

(748.9) 66:5.28 9. The governors of advanced tribal relations. This was the group intrusted with the work of bringing human society up to the level of statehood. Their chief was Tut.

(748.10) 66:5.29 These leaders contributed much to bringing about intertribal marriages. They fostered courtship and marriage after due deliberation and full opportunity to become acquainted. The purely military war dances were refined and made to serve valuable social ends. Many competitive games were introduced, but these ancient folk were a serious people; little humor graced these early tribes. Few of these practices survived the subsequent disintegration of planetary insurrection.

(749.1) 66:5.30 Tut and his associates labored to promote group associations of a peaceful nature, to regulate and humanize warfare, to co-ordinate intertribal relations, and to improve tribal governments. In the vicinity of Dalamatia there developed a more advanced culture, and these improved social relations were very helpful in influencing more remote tribes. But the pattern of civilization prevailing at the Prince’s headquarters was quite different from the barbaric society evolving elsewhere, just as the twentieth-century society of Capetown, South Africa, is totally unlike the crude culture of the diminutive Bushmen to the north.

(749.2) 66:5.31 10. The supreme court of tribal co-ordination and racial co-operation. This supreme council was directed by Van and was the court of appeals for all of the other nine special commissions charged with the supervision of human affairs. This council was one of wide function, being intrusted with all matters of earthly concern which were not specifically assigned to the other groups. This selected corps had been approved by the Constellation Fathers of Edentia before they were authorized to assume the functions of the supreme court of Urantia.

SWIEBODZIN, Polónia, 6 Nov 2010 (AFP) -A construção da mais alta estátua de Cristo do mundo, maior inclusive que a do Cristo Redentor, no Rio de Janeiro, terminou este sábado à tarde em Swiebodzin (oeste da Polônia), comprovou um jornalista da AFP no local.

A estátua mede um total de 36 metros, contra 33 do Cristo carioca, e foi instalada sobre uma colina com 16 metros de altura.

Tal como o Cristo Redentor, a estátua de Swiebodzin, cidade de 40.000 habitantes, é completamente branca, tendo como única diferença uma coroa dourada de três metros de altura.

Os últimos elementos da estátua - a cabeça e os braços - foram instalados com a ajuda de um enorme guindaste enviado especialmente ao local, já que a primeira tentativa, na semana passada, fracassou porque o guindaste levado não tinha a força necessária para a tarefa. Calcula-se o peso total da construção em 440 toneladas.

"É a obra da minha vida (...) Será o maior catequista. A Europa precisa de catequistas como Cristo", disse à AFP Sylwester Zawadzki, padre da paróquia da Misericórdia Divina de Swiebodzin, que lançou este projeto há cinco anos.

A estátua foi construída com donativos particulares arrecadados na Polônia e no exterior, disse o sacerdote.

The 2010 New Planet discovered, aka Gliese 581G a new planet that supports life? Scientists have made a shocking discovery, and that’s a new planet. It’s also known as a “Goldilocks” planet, as it is located within the so-called Goldilocks zone which means that there’s a great possibility that this place will support human life.

Located 20 light years from earth, it would take hundreds of years to reach with the best technology possible. Therefore, it’s unlikely that the new planet will be a popular vacation destination any time soon. Traveling at the speed of light, it would take 20 years to reach – but we don’t have the technology to travel that fast.

Could there be life forms on the new planet? Who knows! It’s possible given its positioning around a red dwarf star (which our sun is a red dwarf, too…see we have lots in common already with our new neighbors.).

The unique thing about this planet is that on one half it’s always day and the other half it’s always night because the planet doesn’t rotate like earth. In addition, instead of taking 365 days to go around the sun, it only takes about 37.

As a child, I always dreamed of going to outer space and visiting another planet. Although in my lifetime that might not be possible, perhaps within a generation or two space travel will be the new exotic luxury. With the possibility of life-supporting planets such as the new planet discovered 2010 aka Gliese 581G, it’s amazing to think that one day it might be possible.

8. A PRECE COMO UMA EXPERIÊNCIA PESSOAL

Há um aspecto da oração verdadeiramente espontâneo, pois o homem primitivo viu-se orando muito antes de ter qualquer conceito claro de um Deus. O homem primitivo tinha o hábito da prece, em duas situações diversas: quando em grande necessidade, ele experimentava o impulso de tatear, buscando ajuda; e quando em júbilo, ele deixava-se levar pela expressão impulsiva da alegria.A prece não é uma evolução da magia; as duas surgiram independentemente. A magia era uma tentativa de ajustar a Deidade às circunstâncias; a prece é um esforço de ajustar a personalidade à vontade da Deidade. A verdadeira prece é tanto moral, quanto religiosa; a magia não é nem moral, nem religiosa.A prece pode tornar-se um costume estabelecido; muitas pessoas oram porque outras o fazem. Outros, ainda, oram porque temem que alguma coisa de terrível aconteça, caso não ofereçam as suas súplicas de sempre.
Para alguns indivíduos, a prece é a expressão tranqüila da gratidão; para outros, uma expressão grupal de louvação, de devoções sociais. Algumas vezes, é a imitação da religião de uma outra pessoa. Uma súplica pode consistir em um pedido do pão de cada dia, ou incorporar um anseio sincero de encontrar Deus e de fazer a Sua vontade. Pode ser uma solicitação puramente egoísta ou um gesto verdadeiro e magnífico, na direção da realização de uma irmanação generosa.A prece pode ser um grito enraivecido de vingança ou um interceder misericordioso pelos inimigos. Pode ser a expressão da esperança de mudar a Deus ou a técnica poderosa de mudar a si próprio. Pode ser o pleito obsequioso de um pecador perdido, diante de um Juiz supostamente severo, ou a expressão jubilosa de um filho liberado pelo Pai celeste, vivo e misericordioso.
O homem moderno fica perplexo com o pensamento de conversar com Deus de um modo puramente pessoal. Muitos abandonaram a oração de sempre, apenas oram
quando sob uma pressão inusitada – nas emergências. O homem deveria falar a Deus com destemor; todavia apenas um ser infantil espiritualmente assumiria persuadir ou presumiria muda-Lo.A prece real certamente alcança a realidade. Até mesmo quando as correntes de ar estão ascendentes, pássaro algum pode planar, a não ser de asas bem abertas. A prece eleva o homem porque é uma técnica para se progredir, por meio da utilização das correntes espirituais ascendentes do universo.A prece genuína aumenta o crescimento espiritual, modifica as atitudes e produz aquela satisfação que vem da comunhão com a divindade. É um transbordamento espontâneo da consciência de Deus.
Deus responde à prece do homem dando a ele uma revelação acrescida da verdade, uma apreciação revalorizada da beleza e uma concepção ampliada da bondade. A prece é um gesto subjetivo que, todavia, leva ao contato com poderosas realidades objetivas nos níveis espirituais da experiência humana; é uma tentativa significativa, do ser humano, para alcançar valores supra-humanos. É o estímulo mais potente para o crescimento espiritual.As palavras da oração são irrelevantes; elas são meramente o canal intelectual pelo qual o rio da súplica espiritual tem a oportunidade de fluir. O valor das palavras, em uma prece, é puramente auto-sugestivo, dentro das devoções íntimas, e sócio-sugestivo, nas devoções grupais. Deus responde à atitude da alma, não às palavras.A prece não é uma técnica para se escapar do conflito, é antes um estímulo ao crescimento em face desse mesmo conflito. Orai apenas pelos valores, não pelas coisas; pelo crescimento, não pela gratificação.
9. AS CONDIÇÕES PARA UMA PRECE EFICIENTE
Se quiserdes chegar a fazer uma prece eficaz, deveríeis ter em mente as leis sob as quais os pedidos prevalecem:
1. Deveis qualificar-vos para uma prece poderosa encarando com sinceridade e coragem os problemas da realidade do universo. Deveis possuir o vigor cósmico.
2. Deveis ter exaurido, honestamente, toda a capacidade inerentemente humana de ajustamento. Deveis ser industriosos.

3. Deveis entregar e abandonar todo desejo da mente, e toda aspiração da alma, ao abraço transformador do crescimento espiritual. Deveis ter experimentado um enaltecimento dos significados e uma elevação dos valores.
4. É preciso escolher, de todo o coração, a vontade divina. É preciso anular o centro morto da indecisão.
5. Não apenas deveis reconhecer a vontade do Pai e escolher cumpri-la, mas deveis fazer uma consagração sem reservas e uma dedicação dinâmica para, de fato, cumprir a vontade do Pai.
6. A vossa oração será dirigida exclusivamente à sabedoria divina, para que ela resolva os problemas humanos específicos que encontrardes na ascensão ao Paraíso – a realização da perfeição divina.

7. E deveis ter fé – uma fé viva.

6. Dawn of Chinese Civilization

(884.4) 79:6.1 Sometime after driving the red man across to North America, the expanding Chinese cleared the Andonites from the river valleys of eastern Asia, pushing them north into Siberia and west into Turkestan, where they were soon to come in contact with the superior culture of the Andites.

(884.5) 79:6.2 In Burma and the peninsula of Indo-China the cultures of India and China mixed and blended to produce the successive civilizations of those regions. Here the vanished green race has persisted in larger proportion than anywhere else in the world.

(884.6) 79:6.3 Many different races occupied the islands of the Pacific. In general, the southern and then more extensive islands were occupied by peoples carrying a heavy percentage of green and indigo blood. The northern islands were held by Andonites and, later on, by races embracing large proportions of the yellow and red stocks. The ancestors of the Japanese people were not driven off the mainland until 12,000 B.C., when they were dislodged by a powerful southern-coastwise thrust of the northern Chinese tribes. Their final exodus was not so much due to population pressure as to the initiative of a chieftain whom they came to regard as a divine personage.

(885.1) 79:6.4 Like the peoples of India and the Levant, victorious tribes of the yellow man established their earliest centers along the coast and up the rivers. The coastal settlements fared poorly in later years as the increasing floods and the shifting courses of the rivers made the lowland cities untenable.

(885.2) 79:6.5 Twenty thousand years ago the ancestors of the Chinese had built up a dozen strong centers of primitive culture and learning, especially along the Yellow River and the Yangtze. And now these centers began to be reinforced by the arrival of a steady stream of superior blended peoples from Sinkiang and Tibet. The migration from Tibet to the Yangtze valley was not so extensive as in the north, neither were the Tibetan centers so advanced as those of the Tarim basin. But both movements carried a certain amount of Andite blood eastward to the river settlements.

(885.3) 79:6.6 The superiority of the ancient yellow race was due to four great factors:

(885.4) 79:6.7 1. Genetic. Unlike their blue cousins in Europe, both the red and yellow races had largely escaped mixture with debased human stocks. The northern Chinese, already strengthened by small amounts of the superior red and Andonic strains, were soon to benefit by a considerable influx of Andite blood. The southern Chinese did not fare so well in this regard, and they had long suffered from absorption of the green race, while later on they were to be further weakened by the infiltration of the swarms of inferior peoples crowded out of India by the Dravidian-Andite invasion. And today in China there is a definite difference between the northern and southern races.

(885.5) 79:6.8 2. Social. The yellow race early learned the value of peace among themselves. Their internal peaceableness so contributed to population increase as to insure the spread of their civilization among many millions. From 25,000 to 5000 B.C. the highest mass civilization on Urantia was in central and northern China. The yellow man was first to achieve a racial solidarity — the first to attain a large-scale cultural, social, and political civilization.

(885.6) 79:6.9 The Chinese of 15,000 B.C. were aggressive militarists; they had not been weakened by an overreverence for the past, and numbering less than twelve million, they formed a compact body speaking a common language. During this age they built up a real nation, much more united and homogeneous than their political unions of historic times.

(885.7) 79:6.10 3. Spiritual. During the age of Andite migrations the Chinese were among the more spiritual peoples of earth. Long adherence to the worship of the One Truth proclaimed by Singlangton kept them ahead of most of the other races. The stimulus of a progressive and advanced religion is often a decisive factor in cultural development; as India languished, so China forged ahead under the invigorating stimulus of a religion in which truth was enshrined as the supreme Deity.

(885.8) 79:6.11 This worship of truth was provocative of research and fearless exploration of the laws of nature and the potentials of mankind. The Chinese of even six thousand years ago were still keen students and aggressive in their pursuit of truth.

(885.9) 79:6.12 4. Geographic. China is protected by the mountains to the west and the Pacific to the east. Only in the north is the way open to attack, and from the days of the red man to the coming of the later descendants of the Andites, the north was not occupied by any aggressive race.

(886.1) 79:6.13 And but for the mountain barriers and the later decline in spiritual culture, the yellow race undoubtedly would have attracted to itself the larger part of the Andite migrations from Turkestan and unquestionably would have quickly dominated world civilization.

7. The Andites Enter China

(886.2) 79:7.1 About fifteen thousand years ago the Andites, in considerable numbers, were traversing the pass of Ti Tao and spreading out over the upper valley of the Yellow River among the Chinese settlements of Kansu. Presently they penetrated eastward to Honan, where the most progressive settlements were situated. This infiltration from the west was about half Andonite and half Andite.
(886.3) 79:7.2 The northern centers of culture along the Yellow River had always been more progressive than the southern settlements on the Yangtze. Within a few thousand years after the arrival of even the small numbers of these superior mortals, the settlements along the Yellow River had forged ahead of the Yangtze villages and had achieved an advanced position over their brethren in the south which has ever since been maintained.

(886.4) 79:7.3 It was not that there were so many of the Andites, nor that their culture was so superior, but amalgamation with them produced a more versatile stock. The northern Chinese received just enough of the Andite strain to mildly stimulate their innately able minds but not enough to fire them with the restless, exploratory curiosity so characteristic of the northern white races. This more limited infusion of Andite inheritance was less disturbing to the innate stability of the Sangik type.

(886.5) 79:7.4 The later waves of Andites brought with them certain of the cultural advances of Mesopotamia; this is especially true of the last waves of migration from the west. They greatly improved the economic and educational practices of the northern Chinese; and while their influence upon the religious culture of the yellow race was short-lived, their later descendants contributed much to a subsequent spiritual awakening. But the Andite traditions of the beauty of Eden and Dalamatia did influence Chinese traditions; early Chinese legends place “the land of the gods” in the west.

(886.6) 79:7.5 The Chinese people did not begin to build cities and engage in manufacture until after 10,000 B.C., subsequent to the climatic changes in Turkestan and the arrival of the later Andite immigrants. The infusion of this new blood did not add so much to the civilization of the yellow man as it stimulated the further and rapid development of the latent tendencies of the superior Chinese stocks. From Honan to Shensi the potentials of an advanced civilization were coming to fruit. Metalworking and all the arts of manufacture date from these days.

(886.7) 79:7.6 The similarities between certain of the early Chinese and Mesopotamian methods of time reckoning, astronomy, and governmental administration were due to the commercial relationships between these two remotely situated centers. Chinese merchants traveled the overland routes through Turkestan to Mesopotamia even in the days of the Sumerians. Nor was this exchange one-sided — the valley of the Euphrates benefited considerably thereby, as did the peoples of the Gangetic plain. But the climatic changes and the nomadic invasions of the third millennium before Christ greatly reduced the volume of trade passing over the caravan trails of central Asia.

8. Later Chinese Civilization

(887.1) 79:8.1 While the red man suffered from too much warfare, it is not altogether amiss to say that the development of statehood among the Chinese was delayed by the thoroughness of their conquest of Asia. They had a great potential of racial solidarity, but it failed properly to develop because the continuous driving stimulus of the ever-present danger of external aggression was lacking.

(887.2) 79:8.2 With the completion of the conquest of eastern Asia the ancient military state gradually disintegrated — past wars were forgotten. Of the epic struggle with the red race there persisted only the hazy tradition of an ancient contest with the archer peoples. The Chinese early turned to agricultural pursuits, which contributed further to their pacific tendencies, while a population well below the land-man ratio for agriculture still further contributed to the growing peacefulness of the country.

(887.3) 79:8.3 Consciousness of past achievements (somewhat diminished in the present), the conservatism of an overwhelmingly agricultural people, and a well-developed family life equaled the birth of ancestor veneration, culminating in the custom of so honoring the men of the past as to border on worship. A very similar attitude prevailed among the white races in Europe for some five hundred years following the disruption of Greco-Roman civilization. *

(887.4) 79:8.4 The belief in, and worship of, the “One Truth” as taught by Singlangton never entirely died out; but as time passed, the search for new and higher truth became overshadowed by a growing tendency to venerate that which was already established. Slowly the genius of the yellow race became diverted from the pursuit of the unknown to the preservation of the known. And this is the reason for the stagnation of what had been the world’s most rapidly progressing civilization.

(887.5) 79:8.5 Between 4000 and 500 B.C. the political reunification of the yellow race was consummated, but the cultural union of the Yangtze and Yellow river centers had already been effected. This political reunification of the later tribal groups was not without conflict, but the societal opinion of war remained low; ancestor worship, increasing dialects, and no call for military action for thousands upon thousands of years had rendered this people ultrapeaceful.

(887.6) 79:8.6 Despite failure to fulfill the promise of an early development of advanced statehood, the yellow race did progressively move forward in the realization of the arts of civilization, especially in the realms of agriculture and horticulture. The hydraulic problems faced by the agriculturists in Shensi and Honan demanded group co-operation for solution. Such irrigation and soil-conservation difficulties contributed in no small measure to the development of interdependence with the consequent promotion of peace among farming groups.

(887.7) 79:8.7 Soon developments in writing, together with the establishment of schools, contributed to the dissemination of knowledge on a previously unequaled scale. But the cumbersome nature of the ideographic writing system placed a numerical limit upon the learned classes despite the early appearance of printing. And above all else, the process of social standardization and religio-philosophic dogmatization continued apace. The religious development of ancestor veneration became further complicated by a flood of superstitions involving nature worship, but lingering vestiges of a real concept of God remained preserved in the imperial worship of Shang-ti.

(888.1) 79:8.8 The great weakness of ancestor veneration is that it promotes a backward-looking philosophy. However wise it may be to glean wisdom from the past, it is folly to regard the past as the exclusive source of truth. Truth is relative and expanding; it lives always in the present, achieving new expression in each generation of men — even in each human life.

(888.2) 79:8.9 The great strength in a veneration of ancestry is the value that such an attitude places upon the family. The amazing stability and persistence of Chinese culture is a consequence of the paramount position accorded the family, for civilization is directly dependent on the effective functioning of the family; and in China the family attained a social importance, even a religious significance, approached by few other peoples.

(888.3) 79:8.10 The filial devotion and family loyalty exacted by the growing cult of ancestor worship insured the building up of superior family relationships and of enduring family groups, all of which facilitated the following factors in the preservation of civilization:

(888.4) 79:8.11 1. Conservation of property and wealth.

(888.5) 79:8.12 2. Pooling of the experience of more than one generation.

(888.6) 79:8.13 3. Efficient education of children in the arts and sciences of the past.

(888.7) 79:8.14 4. Development of a strong sense of duty, the enhancement of morality, and the augmentation of ethical sensitivity.

(888.8) 79:8.15 The formative period of Chinese civilization, opening with the coming of the Andites, continues on down to the great ethical, moral, and semireligious awakening of the sixth century before Christ. And Chinese tradition preserves the hazy record of the evolutionary past; the transition from mother- to father-family, the establishment of agriculture, the development of architecture, the initiation of industry — all these are successively narrated. And this story presents, with greater accuracy than any other similar account, the picture of the magnificent ascent of a superior people from the levels of barbarism. During this time they passed from a primitive agricultural society to a higher social organization embracing cities, manufacture, metalworking, commercial exchange, government, writing, mathematics, art, science, and printing.

(888.9) 79:8.16 And so the ancient civilization of the yellow race has persisted down through the centuries. It is almost forty thousand years since the first important advances were made in Chinese culture, and though there have been many retrogressions, the civilization of the sons of Han comes the nearest of all to presenting an unbroken picture of continual progression right on down to the times of the twentieth century. The mechanical and religious developments of the white races have been of a high order, but they have never excelled the Chinese in family loyalty, group ethics, or personal morality.

(888.10) 79:8.17 This ancient culture has contributed much to human happiness; millions of human beings have lived and died, blessed by its achievements. For centuries this great civilization has rested upon the laurels of the past, but it is even now reawakening to envision anew the transcendent goals of mortal existence, once again to take up the unremitting struggle for never-ending progress.

5. The Struggle for Truth in China

(1032.3) 94:5.1 As the Salem missionaries passed through Asia, spreading the doctrine of the Most High God and salvation through faith, they absorbed much of the philosophy and religious thought of the various countries traversed. But the teachers commissioned by Melchizedek and his successors did not default in their trust; they did penetrate to all peoples of the Eurasian continent, and it was in the middle of the second millennium before Christ that they arrived in China. At See Fuch, for more than one hundred years, the Salemites maintained their headquarters, there training Chinese teachers who taught throughout all the domains of the yellow race.

(1032.4) 94:5.2 It was in direct consequence of this teaching that the earliest form of Taoism arose in China, a vastly different religion than the one which bears that name today. Early or proto-Taoism was a compound of the following factors:

(1032.5) 94:5.3 1. The lingering teachings of Singlangton, which persisted in the concept of Shang-ti, the God of Heaven. In the times of Singlangton the Chinese people became virtually monotheistic; they concentrated their worship on the One Truth, later known as the Spirit of Heaven, the universe ruler. And the yellow race never fully lost this early concept of Deity, although in subsequent centuries many subordinate gods and spirits insidiously crept into their religion.

(1032.6) 94:5.4 2. The Salem religion of a Most High Creator Deity who would bestow his favor upon mankind in response to man’s faith. But it is all too true that, by the time the Melchizedek missionaries had penetrated to the lands of the yellow race, their original message had become considerably changed from the simple doctrines of Salem in the days of Machiventa.

(1032.7) 94:5.5 3. The Brahman-Absolute concept of the Indian philosophers, coupled with the desire to escape all evil. Perhaps the greatest extraneous influence in the eastward spread of the Salem religion was exerted by the Indian teachers of the Vedic faith, who injected their conception of the Brahman — the Absolute — into the salvationistic thought of the Salemites.

(1033.1) 94:5.6 This composite belief spread through the lands of the yellow and brown races as an underlying influence in religio-philosophic thought. In Japan this proto-Taoism was known as Shinto, and in this country, far-distant from Salem of Palestine, the peoples learned of the incarnation of Machiventa Melchizedek, who dwelt upon earth that the name of God might not be forgotten by mankind. *

(1033.2) 94:5.7 In China all of these beliefs were later confused and compounded with the ever-growing cult of ancestor worship. But never since the time of Singlangton have the Chinese fallen into helpless slavery to priestcraft. The yellow race was the first to emerge from barbaric bondage into orderly civilization because it was the first to achieve some measure of freedom from the abject fear of the gods, not even fearing the ghosts of the dead as other races feared them. China met her defeat because she failed to progress beyond her early emancipation from priests; she fell into an almost equally calamitous error, the worship of ancestors.

(1033.3) 94:5.8 But the Salemites did not labor in vain. It was upon the foundations of their gospel that the great philosophers of sixth-century China built their teachings. The moral atmosphere and the spiritual sentiments of the times of Lao-tse and Confucius grew up out of the teachings of the Salem missionaries of an earlier age.

10. PRESENT STATUS OF MACHIVENTA MELCHIZEDEK

93:10.1 During the years of Machiventa's incarnation the Urantia Melchizedek receivers functioned as eleven. When Machiventa considered that his mission as an emergency Son was finished, he signalized this fact to his eleven associates, and they immediately made ready the technique whereby he was to be released from the flesh and safely restored to his original Melchizedek status. And on the third day after his disappearance from Salem he appeared among his eleven fellows of the Urantia assignment and resumed his interrupted career as one of the planetary receivers of 606 of Satania.

93:10.2 Machiventa terminated his bestowal as a creature of flesh and blood just as suddenly and unceremoniously as he had begun it. Neither his appearance nor departure were accompanied by any unusual announcement or demonstration; neither resurrection roll call nor ending of planetary dispensation marked his appearance on Urantia; his was an emergency bestowal. But Machiventa did not end his sojourn in the flesh of human beings until he had been duly released by the Father Melchizedek and had been informed that his emergency bestowal had received the approval of the chief executive of Nebadon, Gabriel of Salvington.

93:10.3 Machiventa Melchizedek continued to take a great interest in the affairs of the descendants of those men who had believed in his teachings when he was in the flesh. But the progeny of Abraham through Isaac as intermarried with the Kenites were the only line which long continued to nourish any clear concept of the Salem teachings.

93:10.4 This same Melchizedek continued to collaborate throughout the nineteen succeeding centuries with the many prophets and seers, thus endeavoring to keep alive the truths of Salem until the fullness of the time for Michael's appearance on earth.

93:10.5 Machiventa continued as a planetary receiver up to the times of the triumph of Michael on Urantia. Subsequently, he was attached to the Urantia service on Jerusem as one of the four and twenty directors, only just recently having been elevated to the position of personal ambassador on Jerusem of the Creator Son, bearing the title Vicegerent Planetary Prince of Urantia. It is our belief that, as long as Urantia remains an inhabited planet, Machiventa Melchizedek will not be fully returned to the duties of his order of sonship but will remain, speaking in the terms of time, forever a planetary minister representing Christ Michael.

93:10.6 As his was an emergency bestowal on Urantia, it does not appear from the records what Machiventa's future may be. It may develop that the Melchizedek corps of Nebadon have sustained the permanent loss of one of their number. Recent rulings handed down from the Most Highs of Edentia, and later confirmed by the Ancients of Days of Uversa, strongly suggest that this bestowal Melchizedek is destined to take the place of the fallen Planetary Prince, Caligastia. If our conjectures in this respect are correct, it is altogether possible that Machiventa Melchizedek may again appear in person on Urantia and in some modified manner resume the role of the dethroned Planetary Prince, or else appear on earth to function as vicegerent Planetary Prince representing Christ Michael, who now actually holds the title of Planetary Prince of Urantia. While it is far from clear to us as to what Machiventa's destiny may be, nevertheless, events which have so recently taken place strongly suggest that the foregoing conjectures are probably not far from the truth.

93:10.7 We well understand how, by his triumph on Urantia, Michael became the successor of both Caligastia and Adam; how he became the planetary Prince of Peace and the second Adam. And now we behold the conferring upon this Melchizedek of the title Vicegerent Planetary Prince of Urantia. Will he also be constituted Vicegerent Material Son of Urantia? Or is there a possibility that an unexpected and unprecedented event is to take place, the sometime return to the planet of Adam and Eve or certain of their progeny as representatives of Michael with the titles vicegerents of the second Adam of Urantia?

93:10.8 And all these speculations associated with the certainty of future appearances of both Magisterial and Trinity Teacher Sons, in conjunction with the explicit promise of the Creator Son to return sometime, make Urantia a planet of future uncertainty and render it one of the most interesting and intriguing spheres in all the universe of Nebadon. It is altogether possible that, in some future age when Urantia is approaching the era of light and life, after the affairs of the Lucifer rebellion and the Caligastia secession have been finally adjudicated, we may witness the presence on Urantia, simultaneously, of Machiventa, Adam, Eve, and Christ Michael, as well as either a Magisterial Son or even Trinity Teacher Sons.

93:10.9 It has long been the opinion of our order that Machiventa's presence on the Jerusem corps of Urantia directors, the four and twenty counselors, is sufficient evidence to warrant the belief that he is destined to follow the mortals of Urantia on through the universe scheme of progression and ascension even to the Paradise Corps of the Finality. We know that Adam and Eve are thus destined to accompany their earth fellows on the Paradise adventure when Urantia has become settled in light and life.

93:10.10 Less than a thousand years ago this same Machiventa Melchizedek, the onetime sage of Salem, was invisibly present on Urantia for a period of one hundred years, acting as resident governor general of the planet; and if the present system of directing planetary affairs should continue, he will be due to return in the same capacity in a little over one thousand years.

93:10.11 This is the story of Machiventa Melchizedek, one of the most unique of all characters ever to become connected with the history of Urantia and a personality who may be destined to play an important role in the future experience of your irregular and unusual world.

16 Nomadic Planets

The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has discovered 16 extrasolar planet candidates that are orbiting a variety of distant stars. In accomplishing this, Hubble looked farther into our Milky Way galaxy than has ever successfully been done before in searching for extrasolar planets. The Hubble observations reach all the way into the central bulge of our galaxy, 26,000 light-years away, or one-quarter the diameter of the Milky Way's spiral disk.

This tally is consistent with the number of planets expected to be uncovered from such a distant survey, based on previous exoplanet detections made in our local solar neighbourhood that only encompasses six percent of the Milky Way's disk. Extrapolated to the entire galaxy, the Hubble result provides strong evidence for the existence of about 6 billion Jupiter-sized planets in the Milky Way.

Five of the newly discovered planets represent a new extreme type of planet not yet found in any nearby searches. Dubbed Ultra-Short-Period Planets (USPPs), these worlds whirl around their stars in less than a day. The shortest-duration orbit is just 10 hours.

The planet bonanza was uncovered during an international Hubble survey, called the Sagittarius Window Eclipsing Extrasolar Planet Search (SWEEPS). Hubble looked at 180,000 stars in the crowded central bulge of our galaxy. Hubble's narrow view covered a swath of sky that is no bigger in angular size than 2 percent the area of the full Moon. The results will appear in the Oct. 5 issue of the journal Nature.

"Discovering the very short-period planets was a big surprise," said team leader Kailash Sahu of the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, USA. "Only the Hubble Space Telescope, with its superb resolution and sensitivity, can look across our galaxy and find planets around faint stars. Our discovery also gives very strong evidence that planets are as abundant in other parts of the galaxy as they are in our solar neighbourhood."

Hubble couldn't view the 16 newly found planet candidates directly. Instead, astronomers used Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys to search for planets by measuring the slight dimming of a star due to the passage of a planet in front of it. This event is called a transit. The planet would have to be about the size of Jupiter to block enough starlight, about 1 percent to 10 percent, to be measurable by Hubble. These planets are called "candidates" because astronomers only have mass measurements for two of them.

Nevertheless, following an exhaustive analysis, the team ruled out alternative explanations such as a grazing transit by a stellar companion that could mimic the predicted signature of a true planet. The finding could more than double the number of planets spied with the transit technique.

The planet candidate with the shortest orbital period, named SWEEPS-10, swings around its star in 10 hours. Located only 1.2 million kilometres from its star (roughly three times the distance between the Earth and the Moon), the planet is among the hottest ever detected, with an estimated temperature of about 1650 degrees C. "This star-hugging planet must be at least 1.6 times the mass of Jupiter, otherwise the star's gravitational muscle would pull the planet apart," said Sahu.

How can a planet survive the scorching temperatures so close to a star? Sahu said that the star's low temperature allows the planet to exist. "USPPs occur preferentially around normal red dwarf stars that are smaller and cooler than our Sun," Sahu explained. He cites the apparent absence of USPPs around sun-like stars in our local neighbourhood as evidence that they must have evaporated away when they migrated too close in to a hotter star.

There is an alternative reason why Jovian planets around cooler stars may migrate in closer to the star, than for hotter stars. That's because the circumstellar disk out of which they formed extends closer to a cooler star. Ever since the discovery of the first "hot Jupiter" in 1995, astronomers have realized that this unusual type of massive planet must have spiralled in close to its parent star from a more distant location where it only could have originally formed. The inner edge of a circumstellar disk halts the migration.

Sahu and his team also found that all of the planet candidates revolve around stars abundant in elements heavier than hydrogen and helium, such as carbon. This bolsters theories that heavy-element-rich stars have the necessary ingredients to form planets.

Planetary transits only occur when the planet's orbit is viewed nearly edge-on. However, only about 10 percent of hot Jupiters have edge-on orbits that allow the planet to be observed transiting a star. To be successful, transit surveys must view a large number of stars at once. The SWEEPS transit survey covered a rich field of stars in the Sagittarius Window (the term "window" implies a clear view into the Galactic Centre, much of the Galactic Plane is obscured by dust). Hubble monitored 180,000 stars for periodic, brief dimming in a star's brightness. The starfield was observed over a continuous seven-day period 23 to 29 February, 2004. To ensure that the dimming was caused by an object orbiting a star, the team used Hubble to detect from 2 to 15 consecutive transits for each of the 16 planet candidates.

Two of the stars in the field are bright enough that the SWEEPS team could make an independent confirmation of a planet's presence by spectroscopically measuring a slight wobble in the star's motion due to the gravitational pull of an unseen companion. They used the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope, located on Cerro Paranal in Chile, to measure a slight wobble in the star. One of the planetary candidates had a mass below the detection limit of 3.8 Jupiter masses. The other candidate is 9.7 Jupiter masses, which is below the cutoff mass for a brown dwarf (a substellar object that forms like a star but does not shine by nuclear fusion) of 13 Jupiter masses.

"Because the stars are so faint and the field of view is so densely packed with stars, it is not feasible to use this radial-velocity method to confirm most of our planet candidates. We may have to wait for the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope which could provide the needed sensitivity to confirm most of the planet candidates," Sahu said.

The Hubble SWEEPS program is an important proof-of concept for CNES's COROT mission scheduled for launch in December 2006 and NASA's Kepler Mission, scheduled for launch in October 2008. COROT and Kepler will continuously monitor regions of the Milky Way galaxy to detect transiting planets. They will be sensitive enough to detect possibly hundreds of Earth-sized planet candidates in or near the habitable zone around a star. The habitable zone encompasses the distances from a star where liquid water can exist on a planet's surface. As with the SWEEPS program, the COROT and Kepler detections will remain candidate planets until they can be independently verified by observations that would provide an independent estimate of planetary masses.

Wandering Mystery Planets

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has spotted what seem to be strange planet-sized objects wandering loose in globular cluster M22.

June 29, 2001 -- Astronomers using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope have spotted something extraordinary. Apparently there are planet-sized objects wandering through a distant globular cluster of stars. Unlike the planets in our own solar system, however, these objects are loners -- they have no central star of their own.

Because the findings are so surprising, researchers caution that they must be confirmed by follow-up observations. But if this discovery is verified, it could change the way astronomers think about stars and planets, and how the two are related.

The unusual objects in question are too dim to be seen directly, even by Hubble. Instead they were detected by the way their gravitational field bends and amplifies light from distant background stars, a technique called "microlensing." From February 22nd to June 15th, 1999, Kailash Sahu (Space Telescope Science Institute) and colleagues monitored 83,000 stars in parts of our Galaxy lying behind the globular cluster M22. They detected one clear microlensing event caused by a normal dwarf star -- a star in M22 about one tenth the mass of our Sun. The dwarf star's gravitational field focused the light from the background star, causing it to appear 10 times brighter before it returned to normal over a period of 18 days.

In addition to the microlensing event caused by the dwarf star, Sahu and his team recorded six even more interesting, unexpectedly brief events where a background star jumped in brightness by as much as a factor of two for less than 20 hours. This means that the microlensing object must have been much smaller than a normal star.

These microlensing events were unusually brief, indicating that the mass of the intervening object could be as little as 80 times that of Earth. Objects this small have never before been detected by microlensing observations. If these results are confirmed by follow-up Hubble observations, the bodies would be the smallest celestial objects ever seen that are not orbiting a star.

So what are they? Theoretically, planets can be gravitationally torn from their parent stars in the cluster to form a population of wanderers. But, say researchers, that explanation won't work. The planet-sized mystery bodies in M22 could make up as much as 10 percent of the cluster's mass. They are too numerous to have once been parts of normal planetary systems.

Sign up for EXPRESS SCIENCE NEWS deliveryBecause microlensing events are unpredictable and rare, astronomers improve their chances of observing one by looking at many stars at once -- much like a person buying several lottery tickets for the same drawing. Most microlensing searches for low-mass stars and planets have been aimed at the central bulge of our galaxy or out towards the Magellanic Clouds -- the densest observable regions of stars in the sky. Sahu and his team decided to aim the Hubble telescope directly through the center of globular cluster M22, which lies between Earth and the galactic bulge. This provided the team with a very dense stellar region to probe for drifting low-mass foreground objects and a very rich background field of stars that might be amplified (or "lensed," as astronomers like to say).

When a background star is microlensed, it brightens and dims for a length of time depending on the mass, distance, and velocity of the intervening lens. Because lensing objects in M22 are all part of the same cluster, the astronomers know their distance (8,500 light-years) and their approximate velocity. As a result, it's possible to estimate the mass of such lenses from the light curve of the background star.

The six brief events Sahu's team detected were even shorter than the interval between the Hubble observations, so in practice they could only estimate a limit on the mass of the lenses. The lenses could be as lightweight as one quarter the mass of the planet Jupiter -- a sensational finding!

To confirm these extraordinary, but tentative results, Sahu and colleagues next plan to monitor the center of the globular cluster continuously over a seven-day interval. They expect to detect 10 to 25 short-duration microlensing events, which will be well-sampled enough to yield direct measurements of the true masses of the small bodies, perhaps confirming their planetary character.

The modern word "planet" comes from a Greek root that means "wanderer," so named by ancient astronomers who watched the worlds of our solar system move among the stars in the night sky. But our planets are not true nomads, they obediently circle the Sun. The mystery objects of M22, however, appear to be genuine wanderers -- plying their own course in a distant sea of stars. Will they eventually lay claim to the title "planets?" Only time -- and lots more data -- will tell.

Sumé no entanto, é o mais conhecido, pela extenção de sua influência. Contavam os índios do Maranhão que o sumé tinha ensinado a seus antepassados o plantio e o preparo da Mandioca, num tempo em que todos se alimentavam de raízes amargas e duras. Mas Sumé não se limitou apenas em técnicas agrícolas. A ele foram atribuidas também a abertura de caminhos e a introdução de novos princípios religiosos. No entanto Sumé era um pacifista e os tupinanbá eram guerreiros. Os relatos mostram o herói expulso e perseguido pelos selvagens. No sul, conta-se que Sumé foi para o Paraguai ( onde tinha ensinado o uso da erva-mate ), seguindo dali para o Peru. Facilities to help train people in sustainable, spiritual living will be central to the on-site community so that these spirit-led ambassadors return to their local communities and uplift them. Such training methodology is one example of evolutionary, divine plans and patterns of planetary upliftment. Spiritually, we are all Family, and God and Spirit are not impersonal. Spiritual brotherhood and sisterhood is grounded in Divine Parenthood -- Creator Father and Creator Mother, sons and daughters.

A planetary Garden is vital to any planet's evolution -- Spiritual representation and integration with our human, 3rd dimensional reality. Co-creation is a two-way process with the Divine reaching down and the sons and daughters of God reaching upward.

93:7.1 Melchizedek continued for some years to instruct his students and to train the Salem missionaries, who penetrated to all the surrounding tribes, especially to Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Asia Minor. And as the decades passed, these teachers journeyed farther and farther from Salem, carrying with them Machiventa's gospel of belief and faith in God.

93:7.2 The descendants of Adamson, clustered about the shores of the lake of Van, were willing listeners to the Hittite teachers of the Salem cult. From this onetime Andite center, teachers were dispatched to the remote regions of both Europe and Asia. Salem missionaries penetrated all Europe, even to the British Isles. One group went by way of the Faroes to the Andonites of Iceland, while another traversed China and reached the Japanese of the eastern islands. The lives and experiences of the men and women who ventured forth from Salem, Mesopotamia, and Lake Van to enlighten the tribes of the Eastern Hemisphere present a heroic chapter in the annals of the human race.

93:7.3 But the task was so great and the tribes were so backward that the results were vague and indefinite. From one generation to another the Salem gospel found lodgment here and there, but except in Palestine, never was the idea of one God able to claim the continued allegiance of a whole tribe or race. Long before the coming of Jesus the teachings of the early Salem missionaries had become generally submerged in the older and more universal superstitions and beliefs. The original Melchizedek gospel had been almost wholly absorbed in the beliefs in the Great Mother, the Sun, and other ancient cults.

93:7.4 You who today enjoy the advantages of the art of printing little understand how difficult it was to perpetuate truth during these earlier times; how easy it was to lose sight of a new doctrine from one generation to another. There was always a tendency for the new doctrine to become absorbed into the older body of religious teaching and magical practice. A new revelation is always contaminated by the older evolutionary beliefs.

Se Michael tivesse de abandonar Nebadon, Gabriel tornar-se-ia, sem a menor dúvida, o administrador dirigente, tendo o Pai Melquisedeque como o seu aliado. Ao mesmo tempo, um novo status seria conferido a todas as ordens de cidadãos permanentes, tais como os Filhos Materiais, os univitátias, os midsonitas, os susátias e os mortais de fusionamento com o Espírito. (828.1) 74:0.1 ADÃO E EVA chegaram a Urântia 37 848 anos antes do ano 1934 d.C. Era meia estação, e o Jardim estava em um pico de florescimento quando chegaram. E foi ao meio-dia, sem prévio anúncio, que dois transportes seráficos, acompanhados pelo pessoal de Jerusém, os encarregados do transporte dos elevadores biológicos até Urântia, aterrissaram suavemente na superfície do planeta em rotação, na vizinhança do templo do Pai Universal. Todo o trabalho de rematerialização dos corpos de Adão e Eva foi executado dentro dos recintos daquele santuário, recentemente criado. E, desde o momento da chegada, passaram-se dez dias até que eles fossem recriados na forma humana dual, para serem apresentados como os novos governantes do mundo. Eles recuperaram a consciência simultaneamente. Os Filhos e Filhas Materiais sempre servem juntos. É parte da essência do serviço deles, em todos os tempos e todos os lugares, não se separarem jamais. Eles estão destinados a trabalhar aos pares; raramente funcionam separadamente.

(828.2) 74:1.1 O Adão e a Eva planetários de Urântia eram membros do corpo sênior de Filhos Materiais de Jerusém; e ali estavam inscritos conjuntamente sob o número 14 311. Eles pertenciam à terceira série física e tinham em torno de dois metros e cinqüenta de altura.

(828.3) 74:1.2 Na época em que Adão foi escolhido para vir para Urântia, ele estava servindo, com a sua companheira, nos laboratórios de ensaios e de provas físicas de Jerusém. Por mais de quinze mil anos, eles haviam sido diretores da divisão de energia experimental aplicada à modificação de formas vivas. Esses filhos estavam todos presentes ao belo templo dos Filhos Materiais, para assistir aos atos de despedida, ligados às últimas cerimônias da aceitação da outorga. Eles acompanharam os seus progenitores até a sede da desmaterialização da sua ordem e foram os últimos a despedir-se deles e a desejar-lhes o êxito divino, enquanto os dois adormeciam na perda da consciência da personalidade que precede a preparação para o transporte seráfico. 2. A Chegada de Adão e Eva

(829.3) 74:2.1 Adão e Eva adormeceram em Jerusém e, quando acordaram no templo do Pai em Urântia, na presença da imponente multidão reunida para dar-lhes as boas-vindas, eles ficaram face a face com dois seres de quem eles muito haviam ouvido falar, Van e o seu fiel companheiro Amadon. 4. Energy Transmitters.

These beings function chiefly, but not wholly, in an intraplanetary capacity. They are marvelous dispatchers of energy as it is manifested on the individual worlds.

When energy is to be diverted to a new circuit, the transmitters deploy themselves in a line along the desired energy path, and by virtue of their unique attributes of energy-attraction, they can actually induce an increased energy flow in the desired direction. This they do just as literally as certain metallic circuits directionize the flow of certain forms of electric energy; and they are living superconductors for more than half of the thirty forms of physical energy.

Transmitters form skillful liaisons which are effective in rehabilitating the weakening currents of specialized energy passing from planet to planet and from station to station on an individual planet. They can detect currents which are much too feeble to be recognized by any other type of living being, and they can so augment these energies that the accompanying message becomes perfectly intelligible. Their services are invaluable to the broadcast receivers.

Energy transmitters can function with regard to all forms of communicable perception; they can render a distant scene "visible" as well as a distant sound "audible."

They provide the emergency lines of communication in the local systems and on the individual planets. These services must be used by practically all creatures for purposes of communication outside of the regularly established circuits.

These beings, together with the energy transformers, are indispensable to the maintenance of mortal existence on those worlds having an impoverished

E depois de conferenciarem, Gabriel e o decano Altíssimo de Edêntia, foi dada ao porta-voz dos arcanjos das hostes celestes a permissão para que ele dispusesse dos restos físicos de Jesus como ele julgasse conveniente.

Depois de concedido esse pedido, ao dirigente dos arcanjos, ele convocou para ajudá-lo muitos dos seus companheiros, junto com uma numerosa hoste de representantes de todas as ordens de personalidades celestes e então, com o auxílio das criaturas intermediárias de Urântia, eles deram prosseguimento à tomada de posse do corpo físico de Jesus. A maior dessas duas pedras era circular e imensa, muito semelhante a uma roda de moinho e se movia em um sulco marcado na rocha, de um modo tal que podia ser rolada para frente e para trás, a fim de abrir ou fechar a tumba. Quando os guardas judeus vigilantes e os soldados romanos, sob a luz escassa na madrugada, viram essa imensa pedra começar a rolar saindo da entrada do sepulcro, aparentemente por si mesma – sem quaisquer meios visíveis a explicar esse movimento –, eles foram tomados pelo medo e pelo pânico e correram, abandonando depressa o local. Os líderes judeus começaram uma sórdida operação para livrar-se supostamente de Jesus oferecendo subornos ao traidor Judas, e agora, ao defrontar-se com essa situação embaraçosa, em vez de pensar em punir os guardas que desertaram seu posto, recorreram ao expediente de subornar esses guardas e os soldados romanos. Pagaram a cada um desses vinte homens uma quantia em dinheiro e instruíram-nos a dizer a todos: “Enquanto dormíamos durante a noite, os seus discípulos precipitaram-se sobre nós e levaram o corpo”. E os líderes judeus fizeram promessas solenes aos soldados de defendê-los perante Pilatos, caso chegasse ao conhecimento do governador que eles tinham aceitado um suborno.

A crença cristã na ressurreição de Jesus tem sido baseada no fato do “sepulcro vazio”. Foi real e verdadeiramente um fato que o sepulcro estivesse vazio, mas essa não é a verdadeda ressurreição. A tumba estava real e verdadeiramente vazia quando os primeiros crentes chegaram, mas esse fato, associado ao da indubitável ressurreição do Mestre, levou à formulação de uma crença que não era verdadeira: o ensinamento de que o corpo material e mortal de Jesus levantou-se da cova. Os restos mortais de Jesus passaram pelo mesmo processo natural de desintegração dos seus elementos que caracteriza todos os corpos humanos na Terra, exceto que, do ponto de vista do tempo, esse modo natural de dissolução foi violentamente acelerado, apressado chegando até mesmo a ser quase instantâneo.

SERAPHIC GUARDIANS OF DESTINY

Having presented the narratives of the Ministering Spirits of Time and the Messenger Hosts of Space, we come to the consideration of the guardian angels, seraphim devoted to the ministry to individual mortals, for whose elevation and perfection all of the vast survival scheme of spiritual progression has been provided. In past ages on Urantia, these destiny guardians were about the only group of angels that had recognition. The planetary seraphim are indeed ministering spirits sent forth to do service for those who shall survive. These attending seraphim have functioned as the spiritual helpers of mortal man in all the great events of the past and the present. In many a revelation "the word was spoken by angels"; many of the mandates of heaven have been "received by the ministry of angels."

Seraphim are the traditional angels of heaven; they are the ministering spirits who live so near you and do so much for you. They have ministered on Urantia since the earliest times of human intelligence.

1. THE GUARDIAN ANGELS

The teaching about guardian angels is not a myth; certain groups of human beings do actually have personal angels. It was in recognition of this that Jesus, in speaking of the children of the heavenly kingdom, said: "Take heed that you despise not one of these little ones, for I say to you, their angels do always behold the presence of the spirit of my Father."

Originally, the seraphim were definitely assigned to the separate Urantia races. But since the bestowal of Michael, they are assigned in accordance with human intelligence, spirituality, and destiny. Intellectually, mankind is divided into three classes:

1. The subnormal minded--those who do not exercise normal will power; those who do not make average decisions. This class embraces those who cannot comprehend God; they lack capacity for the intelligent worship of Deity. The subnormal beings of Urantia have a corps of seraphim, one company, with one battalion of cherubim, assigned to minister to them and to witness that justice and mercy are extended to them in the life struggles of the sphere.

2. The average, normal type of human mind. From the standpoint of seraphic ministry, most men and women are grouped in seven classes in accordance with their status in making the circles of human progress and spiritual development.

3. The supernormal minded--those of great decision and undoubted potential of spiritual achievement; men and women who enjoy more or less contact

with their indwelling Adjusters; members of the various reserve corps of destiny. No matter in what circle a human happens to be, if such an individual becomes enrolled in any of the several reserve corps of destiny, right then and there, personal seraphim are assigned, and from that time until the earthly career is finished, that mortal will enjoy the continuous ministry and unceasing watchcare of a guardian angel. Also, when any human being makes the supreme decision, when there is a real betrothal with the Adjuster, a personal guardian is immediately assigned to that soul.

In the ministry to so-called normal beings, seraphic assignments are made in accordance with the human attainment of the circles of intellectuality and spirituality. You start out in your mind of mortal investment in the seventh circle and journey inward in the task of self-understanding, self-conquest, and self-mastery; and circle by circle you advance until (if natural death does not terminate your career and transfer your struggles to the mansion worlds) you reach the first or inner circle of relative contact and communion with the indwelling Adjuster.

Human beings in the initial or seventh circle have one guardian angel with one company of assisting cherubim assigned to the watchcare and custody of one thousand mortals. In the sixth circle, a seraphic pair with one company of cherubim is assigned to guide these ascending mortals in groups of five hundred. When the fifth circle is attained, human beings are grouped in companies of approximately one hundred, and a pair of guardian seraphim with a group of cherubim is placed in charge. Upon attainment of the fourth circle, mortal beings are assembled in groups of ten, and again charge is given to a pair of seraphim, assisted by one company of cherubim.

When a mortal mind breaks through the inertia of animal legacy and attains the third circle of human intellectuality and acquired spirituality, a personal angel (in reality two) will henceforth be wholly and exclusively devoted to this ascending mortal. And thus these human souls, in addition to the ever-present and increasingly efficient indwelling Thought Adjusters, receive the undivided assistance of these personal guardians of destiny in all their efforts to finish the third circle, traverse the second, and attain the first.

2. THE DESTINY GUARDIANS

Seraphim are not known as guardians of destiny until such time as they are assigned to the association of a human soul who has realized one or more of three achievements: has made a supreme decision to become Godlike, has entered the third circle, or has been mustered into one of the reserve corps of destiny.

In the evolution of races a guardian of destiny is assigned to the very first being who attains the requisite circle of conquest. On Urantia the first mortal to secure a personal guardian was Rantowoc, a wise man of the red race of long ago.

All angelic assignments are made from a group of volunteering seraphim, and these appointments are always in accordance with human needs and with regard to the status of the angelic pair--in the light of seraphic experience, skill, and wisdom. Only seraphim of long service, the more experienced and tested types, are assigned as destiny guards. Many guardians have gained much valuable

experience on those worlds which are of the non-Adjuster fusion series. Like the Adjusters, the seraphim attend these beings for a single lifetime and then are liberated for new assignment. Many guardians on Urantia have had this previous practical experience on other worlds.

When human beings fail to survive, their personal or group guardians may repeatedly serve in similar capacities on the same planet. The seraphim develop a sentimental regard for individual worlds and entertain a special affection for certain races and types of mortal creatures with whom they have been so closely and intimately associated.

The angels develop an abiding affection for their human associates; and you would, if you could only visualize the seraphim, develop a warm affection for them. Divested of material bodies, given spirit forms, you would be very near the angels in many attributes of personality. They share most of your emotions and experience some additional ones. The only emotion actuating you which is somewhat difficult for them to comprehend is the legacy of animal fear that bulks so large in the mental life of the average inhabitant of Urantia. The angels really find it hard to understand why you will so persistently allow your higher intellectual powers, even your religious faith, to be so dominated by fear, so thoroughly demoralized by the thoughtless panic of dread and anxiety.

All seraphim have individual names, but in the records of assignment to world service they are frequently designated by their planetary numbers. At the universe headquarters they are registered by name and number. The destiny guardian of the human subject used in this contactual communication is number 3 of group 17, of company 126, of battalion 4, of unit 384, of legion 6, of host 37, of the 182,314th seraphic army of Nebadon. The current planetary assignment number of this seraphim on Urantia and to this human subject is 3,641,852.

In the ministry of personal guardianship, the assignment of angels as destiny guardians, seraphim always volunteer their services. In the city of this visitation a certain mortal was recently admitted to the reserve corps of destiny, and since all such humans are personally attended by guardian angels, more than one hundred qualified seraphim sought the assignment. The planetary director selected twelve of the more experienced individuals and subsequently appointed the seraphim whom they selected as best adapted to guide this human being through his life journey. That is, they selected a certain pair of equally qualified seraphim; one of this seraphic pair will always be on duty.

Seraphic tasks may be unremitting, but either of the angelic pair can discharge all ministering responsibilities. Like cherubim, seraphim usually serve in pairs, but unlike their less advanced associates, the seraphim sometimes work singly. In practically all their contacts with human beings they can function as individuals. Both angels are required only for communication and service on the higher circuits of the universes.

When a seraphic pair accept guardian assignment, they serve for the remainder of the life of that human being. The complement of being (one of the two angels) becomes the recorder of the undertaking. These complemental seraphim are the recording angels of the mortals of the evolutionary worlds. The records are kept by the pair of cherubim (a cherubim and a sanobim) who are always associated with the seraphic guardians, but these records are always sponsored by one of the seraphim.

For purposes of rest and recharging with the life energy of the universe circuits, the guardian is periodically relieved by her complement, and during her absence the associated cherubim functions as the recorder, as is also the case when the complemental seraphim is similarly absent.

3. RELATION TO OTHER SPIRIT INFLUENCES

One of the most important things a destiny guardian does for her mortal subject is to effect a personal co-ordination of the numerous impersonal spirit influences which indwell, surround, and impinge upon the mind and soul of the evolving material creature. Human beings are personalities, and it is exceedingly difficult for nonpersonal spirits and prepersonal entities to make direct contact with such highly material and discretely personal minds. In the ministry of the guarding angel all of these influences are more or less unified and made more nearly appreciable by the expanding moral nature of the evolving human personality.

More especially can and does this seraphic guardian correlate the manifold agencies and influences of the Infinite Spirit, ranging from the domains of the physical controllers and the adjutant mind-spirits up to the Holy Spirit of the Divine Minister and to the Omnipresent Spirit presence of the Paradise Third Source and Center. Having thus unified and made more personal these vast ministries of the Infinite Spirit, the seraphim then undertakes to correlate this integrated influence of the Conjoint Actor with the spirit presences of the Father and the Son.

The Adjuster is the presence of the Father; the Spirit of Truth, the presence of the Sons. These divine endowments are unified and co-ordinated on the lower levels of human spiritual experience by the ministry of the guardian seraphim. The angelic servers are gifted in combining the love of the Father and the mercy of the Son in their ministry to mortal creatures.

And herein is revealed the reason why the seraphic guardian eventually becomes the personal custodian of the mind patterns, memory formulas, and soul realities of the mortal survivor during that interval between physical death and morontia resurrection. None but the ministering children of the Infinite Spirit could thus function in behalf of the human creature during this phase of transition from one level of the universe to another and higher level. Even when you engage in your terminal transition slumber, when you pass from time to eternity, a high supernaphim likewise shares the transit with you as the custodian of creature identity and the surety of personal integrity.

On the spiritual level, seraphim make personal many otherwise impersonal and prepersonal ministries of the universe; they are co-ordinators. On the intellectual level they are the correlators of mind and morontia; they are interpreters. And on the physical level they manipulate terrestrial environment through their liaison with the Master Physical Controllers and through the co-operative ministry of the midway creatures.

This is a recital of the manifold and intricate function of an attending seraphim; but how does such a subordinate angelic personality, created but a little above the universe level of humanity, do such difficult and complex things? We do not really know, but we conjecture that this phenomenal ministry is in some undisclosed manner facilitated by the unrecognized and unrevealed working of the Supreme Being, the actualizing Deity of the evolving universes of time and

space. Throughout the entire realm of progressive survival in and through the Supreme Being, seraphim are an essential part of continuing mortal progression.

De acordo com os mitos, Odin, Vili e Ve foram os Deuses que criaram o ser humano. Eles encontraram, em Midgard, um par de árvores. Um freixo, denominado Askr, iria ser transformado no primeiro homem. E um olmo, denominado Embla, iria ser transformado na primeira mulher. Para que isso ocorresse, cada um dos 3 Deuses deu uma dádiva ao casal de árvores. Odin deu o sopro da vida e o espírito. Vili deu o conhecimento, os sentimentos e os sentidos. Ve, por fim, deu a forma humana, a capacidade de movimento, o sangue e a carne (coloração).
Dessa forma, nasce o casal que deu origem à Humanidade! Isso diz o mito, mas o que isso tudo significa? Afinal de contas um mito, sem interpretação, não passa de uma estorinha de criança! O poder do mito está justamente em sua interpretação e no que isso se traduz em relação a conhecimento aplicável em nosso dia a dia. Portanto, para o desespero dos mais ortodoxos, aqui vai a minha interpretação pessoal!
O ser humano foi formado por 3 Deuses, sendo que cada um deles contribuiu com uma parte. Logo, o ser humano é trino, ou seja, é formado por 3 partes intimamente interligadas, a saber: Alma, Mente e Corpo.

Odin, que forneceu o espírito, é o responsável pela alma humana. Odin fornece a centelha Divina que arde dentro de cada um de nós, centelha essa que nos anima(sopro da vida) e nos torna parente dos Deuses. Não é a toa que Odin também é um Deus da Morte, que recolhe em seu palácio a alma de todos aqueles que foram valorosos durante a vida, o que antigamente se traduzia em morrer com honra na batalha! Afinal de contas, nada mais natural do que voltar para Ele exatamente a parte que Ele consedeu e que melhor se manifestou aqui em Midgard! Odin também é o Deus do extase divino e da inspiração. Logo, o extase divino provém de nossa alma, e a inspiração ocorre quando um fluxo de energia proveniente de nossa centelha divina se torna compreensível para a nossa Mente.

Vili, que deu o conhecimento e os sentimentos, é responsável pela Mente. Vili também significa Vontade. Logo, a nossa Vontade está em nossa Mente, e portanto, é nossa Mente que tem a palavra final sobre nossas decisões, nos mostrando o caminho a seguir. Mente forte, Vontade forte. Uma Mente fraca, uma Vontade fraca!

E por fim, Ve é responsável pelo nosso corpo físico. Ve significa Sagrado, significando que o nosso corpo
físico é sagrado, pois é o templo da alma. É através de nosso corpo físico que nós podemos manifestar as Virtudes Divinas em Midgard. Por isso mesmo é que nosso corpo físico deve ser bem cuidado e jamais ser desprezado. Ve também é chamado de Lodur, que para alguns autores é um outro nome para Loki. Vê nos deu o sangue, e na forma de Loki, é um Deus Ígneo. E o que faz ferver mais o sangue do que nossas paixões terrenas? Dessa forma, Vê também é o responsável por nossa paixões terrenas, cujo objetivo é satisfazer o corpo físico, que é sagrado, pois é o templo de nossa alma. Esses 3 aspectos, corpo, mente e alma são , na realidade, manifestações distintas de uma mesma coisa. Essa essência, se manifestando no plano da alma, se manifesta como uma centelha Divina. Essa mesma essência, se manifestando no plano da Mente, semanifesta como Vontade. E essa essência, se manifestando no plano do corpo físico, se manifesta como as paixões terrenas.

O grande problema é que nós não estamos cientes da unidade desses 3 aspectos. Tratamos eles como 3 aspectos distintos, enquanto, na realidade, são a mesma coisa com niveis diferentes de manifestação. Não estamos cientes de que esses 3 aspectos formam, na realidade, uma unidade. E essa falta de consciência faz com que, em geral, nossa centelha divina aponte para um lado, enquanto nossas paixões físicas apontam
para o outro. Essa falta de sincronismo entre a nossa centelha divina e nossas paixões físicas nos quebra, e nos faz ficar a mercê de um falso mundo de dualidades!
É como uma carruagem puxada por dois cavalos. A centelha divina é um cavalo, nossas paixões físicas são o outro cavalo, e nossa mente é o carroceiro, sendo que cada cavalo está amarrado a um dos braços do carroceiro. O fato de não termos nossas aspirações espirituais em conformidade com nossas paixões terrenas faz com que cada cavalo vá para um lado diferente. Isso faz com que nossa mente, o carroceiro, se rasgue em dois, criando um falso conceito de Bem contra o Mal, perdendo-se no mundo falso das dualidades inconsiliáveis! A função do carroceiro, que é a nossa mente, é justamente fazer com que as nossas aspirações espirituais se alinhem com nossas paixões terrenas. Dessa forma, ambos os cavalos irão seguir para o mesmo ponto, desaparecendo, assim, as dualidades que afligiam a nossa mente. Iremos ter a mente clara e faremoscom que os dois cavalos nos guiem até o destino escolhido por nossa mente, de forma eficiente e segura.

Mas como a nossa mente pode sincronizar nossa centelha divina com as nossas paixões terrenas, fazendo-as apontar para o mesmo ponto? Isso pode ser feito através do conhecimento. Através de técnicas deintrospecção, nossa mente pode receber a inspiração necessária diretamente de nossa centelha divina. Ao receber essa inspiração, a nossa mente deve usar de conhecimento e raciocínio para interpretar corretamente o que a nossa centelha divina quis de fato nos comunicar. Depois disso, deve usar de critérios para saber como alinhar as nossas paixões terrenas em conformidade com as nossas aspirações espirituais. E para colocar isso em prática, é necessário disciplina e vontade, pois não há disciplina sem vontade.

Nossa mente, além de ser disciplinada, tem que ser equilibrada, para saber levar a alma e o corpo em conformidade. Não adianta darmos importância demasiada às nossas aspirações divinas, em detrimento às nossas paixões terrenas, pois isso só gera sofrimento, doença e ruína. Temos que saber descartar aspirações utópicas e sem sentido, e nos concentrarmos nas aspirações que, de fato, são passíveis de se realizar em Midgard.

Também não adianta darmos livre vazão às paixões terrenas, pois isso também só gera sofrimento, sendo fonte de vícios e insatisfação. Temos que ter disciplina suficiente para frearmos os impulsos terrenos quando esses se mostrarem exagerados, ou então, quando se mostrarem em total desacordo com nossas aspirações divinas.

Não devemos ser castos, mas também não nos convém sermos depravados! E é para achar esse meio termo, esse ponto de equilíbrio, é que saímos em busca de conhecimento. Só dessa forma poderemos manifestar, aqui em Midgard, as nossas Nobre Virtudes, e dessa forma, seremos dignos de ir ao Valhalla quando morrermos, passar a eternidade em companhia de nosso amado Pai Excelso, Vodan (Odinn)!

P.1250 - §1 Les Très Hauts gouvernent dans les royaumes des hommes au moyen de beaucoup de forces et d'agents célestes, mais principalement par le ministère des séraphins.

P.1250 - §2 Aujourd'hui à midi, la liste d'appel des anges planétaires, gardiens et autres, sur Urantia comportait 501.234.619 couples de séraphins. J'avais sous mes ordres deux- cents armées séraphiques 597.196.800 couples de séraphins soit 1.194.393.600 anges individuels. Toutefois, le contrôle n'en fait apparaître que 1.002.469.238. Il s'ensuit donc que 191.924.362 anges étaient absents de ce monde pour des services concernant des transports, des messages ou la mort. (Sur Urantia, il y a à peu près autant de chérubins que de séraphins, et ils sont organisés d'une manière similaire.)

P.1250 - §3 Les séraphins et leurs chérubins associés s'occupent activement des détails du gouvernement suprahumain d'une planète, spécialement sur les mondes isolés par suite de rébellion. Les anges, habilement aidés par les médians, fonctionnent sur Urantia comme de véritables ministres supramatériels exécutant les ordres du gouverneur général résident et de tous ses associés et subordonnés. En tant que classe, les séraphins occupent beaucoup d'autres postes que ceux de gardien individuel ou collectif.

P.1250 - §4 Urantia n'est pas dépourvue d'une supervision appropriée et efficace par les dirigeants de son système, de sa constellation et de son univers local, mais son gouvernement planétaire ne ressemble à celui d'aucun autre monde dans le système de Satania, ni même dans tout Nébadon. Le caractère unique de votre plan de supervision est dû à nombre de circonstances inhabituelles :

1 . LA SOUVERAINETÉ D'URANTIA

P.1250 - §12 La souveraineté originelle d'Urantia était à la charge du souverain du système de Satania. Il la délégua d'abord à une commission mixte de Melchizédeks et de Porteurs de Vie, et ce groupe opéra sur Urantia jusqu'à l'arrivée d'un Prince Planétaire régulièrement nommé. Après la chute du Prince Caligastia, à l'époque de la rébellion de Lucifer, Urantia n'eut pas de relation sûre et bien établie avec l'univers local et ses divisions administratives jusqu'à ce que Micaël eût parachevé son effusion dans la chair et que l'Union des Jours l'eût proclamé Prince Planétaire d'Urantia. Cette proclamation fixa, en principe pour toujours, le statut de votre monde en sécurité, mais, en pratique, le Fils Créateur Souverain ne fit rien pour administrer personnellement la planète, sauf qu'il établit sur Jérusem la commission de vingt-quatre anciens mortels d'Urantia avec autorité pour le représenter dans le gouvernement d'Urantia et de toutes les autres planètes en quarantaine du système. Un membre de ce conseil réside maintenant en permanence sur Urantia comme gouverneur général résident.

P.1251 - §1 L'autorité de vice-gérant pour agir à la place de Micaël comme Prince Planétaire a été récemment conférée à Machiventa Melchizédek, mais ce Fils de l'univers local n'a pas pris la moindre mesure pour modifier le régime planétaire actuel des administrations successives des gouverneurs généraux résidents.

P.1251 - §2 Il est peu probable qu'un changement notable soit apporté au gouvernement d'Urantia durant la présente dispensation, à moins que le Prince Planétaire vice-gérant ne s'y rende pour assumer les responsabilités de son titre. Certains de nos associés estiment que, dans un proche avenir, le plan consistant à envoyer sur Urantia l'un des vingt-quatre conseillers pour agir comme gouverneur général sera remplacé par l'arrivée officielle de Machiventa Melchizédek avec le mandat de vice-gérant de la souveraineté d'Urantia. Comme Prince Planétaire en exercice, il continuerait indubitablement à administrer la planète jusqu'au jugement final de la rébellion de Lucifer, et probablement même jusqu'à l'époque lointaine de l'ancrage de la planète dans la lumière et la vie.

P.1251 - §3 Certains croient que Machiventa ne viendra pas prendre personnellement en mains les affaires d'Urantia avant la fin de la présente dispensation. D'autres estiment que le Prince vice-gérant ne peut venir, comme tel, avant que Micaël ne revienne sur Urantia comme il l'a promis lorsqu'il était encore dans la chair. D'autres encore, y compris le narrateur, s'attendent que Melchizédek apparaisse à tout moment.

2 . LE CONSEIL DES SUPERVISEURS PLANÉTAIRES

P.1251 - §4 Depuis l'époque de l'effusion de Micaël sur votre monde, la direction générale d'Urantia a été confiée sur Jérusem à un groupe spécial composé de vingt-quatre anciens Urantiens. Les qualifications pour faire partie de cette commission nous sont inconnues, mais nous avons constaté que ceux qui en sont devenus membres ont tous contribué à étendre la souveraineté du Suprême dans le système de Satania. Par nature, ils étaient tous de vrais dirigeants quand ils opéraient sur Urantia. Sauf pour Machiventa Melchizédek, ces qualités de chef ont encore été accrues par l'expérience du monde des maisons et complétées par l'entrainement de la citoyenneté de Jérusem. Les nominations des membres du conseil des vingt-quatre sont proposées par le cabinet de Lanaforge, appuyées par les Très Hauts d'Édentia, approuvées par la Sentinelle Affectée de Jérusem et décidées par Gabriel de Salvington conformément aux ordres de Micaël. Les membres nommés temporairement ont exactement les mêmes prérogatives que les membres permanents de cette commission de superviseurs spéciaux.

P.1251 - §5 Ce conseil d'administrateurs planétaires s'occupe spécialement de superviser les activités d'Urantia résultant du fait que Micaël y a effectué son effusion terminale. Ses membres sont maintenus en contact étroit et immédiat avec Micaël, grâce aux activités de liaison d'une Brillante Étoile du Soir, le même être qui servit Jésus pendant toute son effusion de mortel.

P.1252 - §1 Présentement, c'est Jean, que vous appelez " le Baptiste ", qui préside quand le conseil est en session sur Jérusem, mais celui qui est, de droit, chef du conseil est la Sentinelle Affectée de Satania, le représentant direct et personnel de l'Inspecteur Associé de Salvington et de l'Agent Exécutif Suprême d'Orvonton.

P.1252 - §2 Les membres de cette même commission d'anciens Urantiens agissent aussi à titre consultatif comme superviseurs des trente-six autres mondes du système isolés par la rébellion. Ils rendent un très précieux service en maintenant Lanaforge, le Souverain Systémique, en contact étroit et compatissant avec les affaires de ces planètes, qui restent encore plus ou moins sous le supercontrôle des Pères de la Constellation de Norlatiadek. À titre individuel, ces vingt-quatre conseillers se rendent fréquemment sur chacune des planètes en quarantaine, et spécialement sur Urantia.

P.1252 - §3 Chacun des autres mondes isolés possède une commission consultative similaire et plus ou moins nombreuse de membres qui les ont habités autrefois, mais ces autres commissions sont subordonnées au groupe des vingt-quatre anciens d'Urantia. Les membres de ce groupe s'intéressent donc activement à toutes les phases de progrès humain sur chacun des mondes en quarantaine de Satania, mais ils s'occupent spécialement et particulièrement du bien-être et de l'avancement des races humaines d'Urantia. En effet, ils ne supervisent directement les affaires d'aucune planète, sauf d'Urantia, et, même là, leur autorité n'est pas complète, excepté dans certains domaines concernant la survie des mortels.

P.1252 - §4 Nul ne sait combien de temps ces vingt-quatre conseillers d'Urantia continueront dans leur présent statut, détachés du programme régulier des activités universelles. Sans aucun doute, ils poursuivront leur présent service jusqu'à ce que se produise, dans le statut planétaire, un changement tel que la fin d'une dispensation, la pleine prise de pouvoir par Machiventa Melchizédek, le jugement final de la rébellion de Lucifer ou la réapparition de Micaël sur le monde de son effusion finale. Le présent gouverneur général résident d'Urantia incline à croire que tous, sauf Machiventa, pourraient être libérés pour l'ascension vers le Paradis dès que le système de Satania sera rétabli dans les circuits de la constellation. Toutefois, d'autres opinions ont également cours.

3 . LE GOUVERNEUR GÉNÉRAL RÉSIDENT

P.1252 - §5 Tous les cent ans du temps d'Urantia, le corps des vingt-quatre superviseurs planétaires de Jérusem désigne un de ses membres pour séjourner sur votre monde et y agir comme son délégué exécutif, comme gouverneur général résident. À l'époque où se préparaient ces exposés, cet agent exécutif fut changé, et le vingtième à assurer ce service remplaça le dix-neuvième. Le nom du présent superviseur planétaire ne vous est pas communiqué, uniquement à cause de la tendance excessive des mortels à vénérer, voire à déifier, leurs compatriotes extraordinaires et leurs supérieurs suprahumains.

P.1252 - §6 Le gouverneur général résident n'a aucune autorité personnelle effective pour diriger les affaires du monde, sauf en tant que représentant des vingt-quatre conseillers de Jérusem. Il agit comme coordonnateur de l'administration supra-humaine ; il est le chef respecté et le dirigeant universellement reconnu des êtres célestes exerçant leur fonction sur Urantia. Tous les ordres d'armées angéliques le considèrent comme leur directeur coordonnateur, tandis que les médians réunis (depuis que 1-2-3 le premier est parti pour devenir l'un des vingt-quatre conseillers) considèrent les gouverneurs généraux successifs comme leurs pères planétaires.

P.1253 - §1 Bien que le gouverneur général ne possède pas d'autorité effective et personnelle sur la planète, il communique tous les jours des dizaines d'ordonnances et de décisions qui sont acceptées comme finales par toutes les personnalités concernées. Il tient beaucoup plus d'un conseiller paternel que d'un chef technique. Sous certains rapports, il opère comme le ferait un Prince Planétaire, mais son administration se rapproche davantage de celle des Fils Matériels.

P.1253 - §2 Le gouvernement d'Urantia est représenté dans les conseils de Jérusem selon un arrangement d'après lequel le gouverneur général, revenant de servir, siège comme membre temporaire du cabinet des Princes Planétaires du Souverain Systémique. Quand Machiventa fut désigné comme Prince vice-gérant, on s'attendait qu'il prît immédiatement sa place dans le conseil des Princes Planétaires de Satania, mais, jusqu'ici, il n'a fait aucun geste dans ce sens.

P.1253 - §3 Le gouvernement supramatériel d'Urantia ne maintient pas de relations organiques très étroites avec les unités supérieures de l'univers local. En un sens, le gouverneur général résident représente Salvington aussi bien que Jérusem, puisqu'il agit au nom des vingt-quatre conseillers qui représentent directement Micaël et Gabriel ; et le gouverneur planétaire, étant un citoyen de Jérusem, peut opérer comme porte-parole du Souverain du Système. Les autorités de la constellation sont représentées directement par un Fils Vorondadek, l'observateur d'Édentia.

4 . LE TRÈS HAUT OBSERVATEUR

P.1253 - §4 La souveraineté d'Urantia est encore compliquée du fait que jadis, peu après la rébellion planétaire, le gouvernement de Norlatiadek a pris l'initiative discrétionnaire d'exercer l'autorité planétaire. Un Fils Vorondadek, observateur pour les Très Hauts d'Édentia, réside encore sur Urantia comme fidéicommissaire de la souveraineté planétaire, en l'absence d'action directe par Micaël. Le présent Très Haut observateur (et jadis régent) est le vingt-troisième à servir ainsi sur Urantia.

P.1253 - §5 Certains groupes de problèmes planétaires restent encore sous le contrôle des Très Hauts d'Édentia, leur juridiction s'étant exercée au temps de la rébellion de Lucifer. C'est un fils Vorondadek, l'observateur de Norlatiadek, qui exerce l'autorité dans ces affaires et maintient des relations consultatives très étroites avec les superviseurs planétaires. Les commissaires raciaux sont très actifs sur Urantia, et les divers chefs de leurs groupes sont officieusement rattachés à l'observateur Vorondadek résident, qui joue, auprès d'eux, le rôle de directeur consultatif.

P.1253 - §6 En cas de crise, ce serait ce fils Vorondadek d'Édentia, occupant actuellement un poste d'observation, qui serait le chef effectif et souverain du gouvernement, sauf pour certaines affaires purement spirituelles. (Dans ces problèmes exclusivement spirituels et dans certaines affaires purement personnelles, l'autorité suprême paraît dévolue à l'archange commandant attaché au quartier général divisionnaire de l'ordre des archanges récemment établi sur Urantia.)

P.1253 - §7 Un Très Haut observateur jouit du pouvoir discrétionnaire de prendre en mains le gouvernement planétaire en temps de crise grave, et les annales rapportent que ce fut trente-trois fois le cas dans l'histoire d'Urantia. À ces époques, le Très Haut observateur fait fonction de Très Haut régent. Il exerce alors une autorité indiscutée sur tous les ministres et administrateurs résidant sur la planète, à la seule exception de l'organisation divisionnaire des archanges.

P.1253 - §8 Les régences des Vorondadeks ne sont pas spéciales aux planètes isolées après rébellion, car les Très Hauts peuvent intervenir à tout moment dans la gestion des mondes habités en interposant la sagesse supérieure des dirigeants de la constellation dans les affaires des royaumes des hommes.

5 . LE GOUVERNEMENT PLANÉTAIRE

P.1254 - §1 L'administration actuelle d'Urantia est vraiment difficile à décrire. Il n'existe pas de gouvernement officiel défini selon les lignes de l'organisation de l'univers, avec des départements législatifs, exécutifs et judiciaires séparés. Les vingt-quatre conseillers forment le groupe qui se rapproche le plus de la branche législative du gouvernement planétaire. Le gouverneur général est un chef exécutif provisoire et consultatif, le Très Haut observateur ayant le droit de veto. Nul pouvoir judiciaire n'opère sur la planète avec une autorité absolue il n'y a que des commissions de conciliation.

P.1254 - §2 Par consentement mutuel, la majorité des problèmes impliquant des séraphins et des médians est tranchée par le gouverneur général. Toutefois, sauf quand le gouverneur général exprime les ordres des vingt-quatre conseillers, ses ordonnances sont toutes sujettes à appel auprès des commissions de conciliation, auprès des autorités locales constituées pour le fonctionnement planétaire ou même auprès du Souverain Systémique de Satania.

P.1254 - §3 L'absence de l'état-major corporel d'un Prince Planétaire et du régime matériel d'un Fils et d'une Fille Adamiques est partiellement compensée par le ministère spécial des séraphins et par les services exceptionnels des médians. L'absence du Prince Planétaire est efficacement compensée par la présence trine des archanges, du Très Haut observateur et du gouverneur général.

P.1254 - §4 Ce gouvernement planétaire, organisé d'une manière plutôt vague et quelque peu personnelle, est plus efficace que prévu, à cause du gain de temps apporté par l'assistance des archanges et de leur circuit toujours disponible et si souvent utilisé en cas d'urgence planétaire ou de difficultés administratives. Techniquement, la planète est encore spirituellement isolée dans les circuits de Norlatiadek, mais, en cas d'urgence, on peut maintenant éviter ce handicap en employant le circuit des archanges. Bien entendu, l'isolement planétaire a peu d'importance pour les mortels individuels depuis que l'Esprit de Vérité a été répandu sur toute chair, il y a dix-neuf-cents ans.

P.1254 - §5 Chaque journée administrative sur Urantia commence par une conférence consultative à laquelle assistent le gouvernement général, le chef planétaire des archanges, le Très Haut observateur, le supernaphin superviseur, le chef des Porteurs de Vie résidents et des hôtes invités parmi les Fils élevés de l'univers ou parmi certains visiteurs estudiantins séjournant à ce moment-là sur la planète.

P.1254 - §6 Le cabinet administratif direct du gouvernement général se compose de douze séraphins, chefs en exercice des douze groupes d'anges spéciaux opérant comme directeurs suprahumains immédiats du progrès et de la stabilité planétaires.

6 . LES MAITRES SÉRAPHINS DE LA SUPERVISION PLANÉTAIRE

P.1254 - §7 Quand le premier gouverneur général arriva sur Urantia simultanément avec l'effusion de l'Esprit de Vérité, il était accompagné de douze groupes de séraphins spéciaux, diplômés de Séraphington, qui furent immédiatement affectés à certains services planétaires particuliers. Ces anges supérieurs sont connus sous le nom de maitres séraphins de la supervision planétaire. À part le supercontrôle du Très Haut observateur, ils sont sous la direction immédiate du gouverneur général résident.

P.1255 - §1 Tout en opérant sous la supervision générale de ce dernier, ces douze groupes d'anges reçoivent directement leurs ordres du conseil séraphique des douze chefs en exercice de chaque groupe. Ce conseil sert aussi de cabinet volontaire pour le gouverneur général résident.

P.1255 - §2 En tant que chef planétaire des séraphins, je préside ce conseil des chefs séraphiques. Je suis un supernaphin volontaire de l'ordre primaire, servant sur Urantia comme successeur de celui qui fut jadis chef des armées d'anges de la planète et qui fit défaut au moment de la sécession de Caligastia.

P.1255 - §3 Les douze corps de maitres séraphins de la supervision planétaire opèrent sur Urantia comme suit :

P.1255 - §4 1. Les anges de l'époque. Ils sont les anges de l'époque en cours, le groupe dispensationnel. Ces ministres célestes sont chargés de surveiller et de diriger les affaires de chaque génération afin qu'elles s'insèrent selon les prévisions dans la mosaïque de l'âge durant lequel elles apparaissent. Le présent corps des anges de l'époque servant sur Urantia est le troisième groupe affecté à la planète durant la présente dispensation.

P.1255 - §5 2. Les anges du progrès. Ces séraphins ont la tâche d'inaugurer le progrès évolutionnaire des âges sociaux successifs. Ils encouragent le développement de la tendance au progrès, inhérente aux créatures évolutionnaires. Ils travaillent sans cesse à établir l'état de choses tel qu'il devrait être. Le groupe présentement en place est le second de cet ordre affecté à la planète.

P.1255 - §6 3. Les gardiens de la religion. Ils sont les " anges des Églises " qui luttent ardemment pour ce qui est et pour ce qui a été. Ils s'efforcent de maintenir les idéaux de ce qui a survécu, afin d'assurer la sécurité du transit des valeurs morales entre deux époques. Ils forment la contrepartie des anges du progrès en cherchant constamment à transférer, d'une génération à la suivante, les valeurs impérissables des antiques structures démodées, dans des modèles nouveaux, donc moins cristallisés, de pensée et de conduite. Ces anges soutiennent des formes spirituelles, mais ne sont pas la source du sectarisme excessif et des absurdes controverses déchirantes entre personnes prétendument religieuses. Le corps de ces gardiens fonctionnant présentement sur Urantia est le cinquième à servir ainsi.

P.1255 - §7 4. Les anges de la vie nationale. Ils sont les " anges des trompettes ", dirigeant les accomplissements politiques de la vie nationale sur Urantia. Le groupe qui assure présentement le supercontrôle des relations internationales est le quatrième du genre servant sur la planète. C'est particulièrement par le ministère de cette division séraphique que " les Très Hauts règnent dans les royaumes des hommes ".

P.1255 - §8 5. Les anges des races. Ils travaillent à conserver les races évolutionnaires du temps, sans se soucier de leurs enchevêtrements politiques et de leurs groupements religieux. Sur Urantia, on trouve les restes de neuf races humaines qui se sont mêlées et combinées pour former les peuples des temps modernes. Ces séraphins attachés aux races sont étroitement associés au ministère des commissaires raciaux. Leur groupe résidant présentement sur Urantia est le corps originel affecté à la planète peu après le jour de la Pentecôte.

P.1255 - §9 6. Les anges du futur. Ils sont les anges des projets, qui prévoient un âge futur et font des plans pour réaliser le meilleur d'une nouvelle dispensation en progrès. Ils sont les architectes des ères successives. Le groupe présentement sur la planète a fonctionné comme tel depuis le commencement de la présente dispensation.

P.1256 - §1 7. Les anges de l'illumination. Urantia reçoit présentement l'aide de son troisième corps de séraphins consacrés à développer l'éducation planétaire. Ces anges s'occupent d'instruire mentalement et moralement les individus, familles, groupes, écoles, communautés, nations et les races entières.

P.1256 - §2 8. Les anges de la santé. Ils sont les ministres séraphiques affectés à l'assistance des agents humains consacrés à promouvoir la santé et la prévention contre les maladies. Le présent corps est le sixième groupe à servir ainsi au cours de la présente dispensation.

P.1256 - §3 9. Les séraphins du foyer. Urantia bénéficie en ce moment des services du cinquième groupe de cet ordre de ministres angéliques consacrés à préserver et à faire progresser la vie des foyers, institution fondamentale de la civilisation humaine.

P.1256 - §4 10. Les anges de l'industrie. Ce groupe séraphique s'occupe de stimuler le développement industriel et d'améliorer les conditions économiques parmi les peuples d'Urantia. Il a été remplacé sept fois depuis l'effusion de Micaël.

P.1256 - §5 11. Les anges de la récréation. Ils sont les séraphins qui stimulent les valeurs de jeu, d'humour et de repos. Ils cherchent toujours à élever le niveau des divertissements des hommes et à promouvoir ainsi l'emploi le plus profitable des loisirs humains. Le présent corps est le troisième de cet ordre apportant son ministère à Urantia.

P.1256 - §6 12. Les anges du ministère suprahumain. Ils sont les anges des anges, les séraphins affectés au ministère de toutes les autres vies suprahumaines, temporaires ou permanentes, sur la planète. Ce corps a servi depuis le commencement de la présente dispensation.

P.1256 - §7 Quand ces groupes de maitres séraphins ont des opinions différentes en matière de politique ou de procédure planétaire, leurs différends sont généralement arbitrés par le gouverneur général ; mais toutes les ordonnances de ce dernier sont sujettes à appel selon la nature et la gravité des affaires impliquées dans le désaccord.

P.1256 - §8 Aucun de ces groupes angéliques n'exerce de contrôle direct ou arbitraire sur les domaines de leur affectation. Ils ne peuvent contrôler totalement les affaires de leurs champs d'action respectifs, mais il leur est loisible de manipuler les conditions planétaires et d'associer des circonstances de manière à influencer favorablement les sphères d'activité humaine auxquelles ils sont attachés, et ils le font.

P.1256 - §9Les maitres séraphins de la supervision planétaire emploient de nombreux dispositifs pour exécuter leurs missions. Ils opèrent comme centres d'échange pour les idées, comme focalisateurs pour le mental et comme promoteurs de projets. Ils sont incapables d'introduire des concepts nouveaux et plus élevés dans le mental humain, mais agissent souvent pour intensifier un idéal supérieur déjà apparu dans l'intellect humain.

P.1256 - §10 En dehors de ces nombreux moyens d'action positive, les maitres séraphins assurent le progrès planétaire contre les périls vitaux en mobilisant, en entrainant et en maintenant le corps de réserve de la destinée. La principale fonction de ces réservistes est de protéger le progrès évolutionnaire contre un effondrement. Ils représentent le dispositif mis en place par les forces célestes pour se prémunir contre les surprises ; ce corps est leur garant contre les désastres.

7 . LE CORPS DE RÉSERVE DE LA DESTINÉE

P.1257 - §1 Le corps de réserve de la destinée se compose de vivants, hommes et femmes, qui ont été admis au service spécial de l'administration suprahumaine des affaires du monde. Ce corps comprend les hommes et les femmes de chaque génération choisis par les directeurs spirituels du royaume pour contribuer au ministère de miséricorde et de sagesse auprès des enfants du temps sur les mondes évolutionnaires. Dans l'exécution des plans concernant l'ascension, la règle générale est de commencer à utiliser cette liaison de créatures volitives humaines dès qu'elles sont compétentes et dignes d'assumer ces responsabilités. En conséquence, dès que des hommes et des femmes apparaissent sur la scène de l'action temporelle avec une capacité mentale suffisante, un statut moral adéquat et la spiritualité requise, ils sont rapidement affectés au groupe céleste approprié de personnalités planétaires à titre d'agents humains de liaison, d'assistants mortels.

P.1257 - §2 Quand des êtres humains sont choisis comme protecteurs de la destinée planétaire et deviennent des individus pivots dans les plans poursuivis par les administrateurs du monde, alors le chef des séraphins planétaires confirme leur attachement temporel au corps séraphique et désigne des gardiens personnels de la destinée pour servir auprès de ces mortels. Tous ces réservistes ont des Ajusteurs conscients d'eux-mêmes, et la plupart d'entre eux opèrent dans les cercles cosmiques supérieurs d'accomplissement intellectuel et d'aboutissement spirituel.

P.1257 - §3 Les mortels du royaume sont choisis, pour servir dans le corps de réserve de la destinée sur les mondes habités, pour les raisons suivantes :

P.1257 - §5 2. Consécration sincère à une cause sociale, économique, politique, spirituelle ou autre, doublée d'une bonne volonté pour servir sans récompenses ni marques de reconnaissance humaines.

P.1257 - §6 3. Possession d'un Ajusteur de Pensée doué d'une extraordinaire variété de talents et ayant probablement eu, avant de venir sur Urantia, l'expérience d'avoir affronté des difficultés planétaires et lutté dans des situations critiques où un monde était menacé.

P.1257 - §7 Chaque division de service céleste planétaire a droit à un corps de liaison composé de ces mortels ayant statut de réservistes de la destinée. Un monde habité emploie en moyenne soixante-dix corps de la destinée séparés qui sont en relation intime avec la conduite suprahumaine courante des affaires de ce monde. Sur Urantia, il y a douze corps de réserve de la destinée, un pour chacun des groupes planétaires de supervision séraphique.

P.1257 - §8 Les douze groupes urantiens de réservistes de la destinée se composent d'habitants mortels de la sphère, qui ont été formés pour occuper de nombreuses positions clefs sur terre et sont maintenus prêts à agir en cas d'urgence planétaire. L'ensemble de ces corps comprend présentement 962 personnes. Le corps le plus restreint en compte 41 et le plus nombreux 172. À l'exception de moins d'une vingtaine de personnalités de contact, les membres de ce groupe unique n'ont aucunement conscience d'avoir été préparés pour agir éventuellement dans certaines crises planétaires. Ces réservistes mortels sont choisis par les corps auxquels ils sont respectivement attachés ; ils sont également entrainés et préparés dans leur mental profond par la technique conjuguée du ministère de l'Ajusteur de Pensée et du gardien séraphique. Bien souvent, de nombreuses autres personnalités célestes participent à cet entrainement inconscient ; dans toute cette préparation spéciale, les médians rendent des services précieux et indispensables.

P.1258 - §1 Sur beaucoup de mondes, les médians secondaires les mieux adaptés sont capables d'établir, à des degrés variables, le contact avec les Ajusteurs de Pensée de certains mortels favorablement constitués, en pénétrant habilement le mental où habite l'Ajusteur. (C'est précisément par une telle combinaison fortuite d'adaptation cosmique que les présentes révélations ont été matérialisées en langue anglaise sur Urantia.). De tels mortels des mondes évolutionnaires offrant des possibilités de contact, sont mobilisés dans les nombreux corps de réserve. Dans une certaine mesure, c'est grâce à ces petits groupes de personnalités ayant des vues d'avenir que la civilisation spirituelle progresse et que les Très Hauts peuvent régner dans les royaumes des hommes. Les hommes et les femmes de ces corps de réserve de la destinée ont ainsi divers degrés de contact avec leurs Ajusteurs par le ministère intermédiaire des créatures médianes ; mais ces humains- là sont peu connus de leurs compagnons, sauf dans les rares crises sociales et situations spirituelles critiques où ces personnalités de réserve agissent pour empêcher l'effondrement de la culture évolutionnaire ou l'extinction de la lumière de la vérité vivante. Sur Urantia, ces réservistes de la destinée n'ont été que rarement mis en vedette dans les pages de l'histoire humaine.

P.1258 - §2 Les réservistes opèrent inconsciemment comme conservateurs des connaissances planétaires essentielles. Bien des fois, à la mort d'un réserviste, certaines données vitales du mental sont transférées du réserviste mourant à un successeur plus jeune au moyen d'une liaison entre leurs deux Ajusteurs de Pensée. Il ne fait pas de doute que les Ajusteurs opèrent aussi, avec ce corps de réserve, de bien des manières qui nous sont inconnues.

P.1258 - §3 Sur Urantia, le corps de réserve de la destinée n'a pas de chef permanent, mais il a ses propres conseils permanents qui constituent son organisation gouvernementale. Ceux-ci comprennent le conseil judiciaire, le conseil d'authenticité historique, le conseil sur la souveraineté politique et beaucoup d'autres. De temps en temps, et conformément à l'organisation du corps de réserve, ces conseils permanents ont nommé des chefs (mortels) titulaires de l'ensemble du corps de réserve pour une fonction spécifique. Le mandat de tels chefs réservistes est généralement une affaire de quelques heures et se limite à l'exécution d'une tâche précise et immédiate.

P.1258 - §4 C'est à l'époque des Adamites et des Andites que le corps de réserve d'Urantia atteignit son effectif maximum. Il diminua constamment, en même temps que le sang violet se diluait, et passa par un minimum aux environs du jour de la Pentecôte ; depuis lors, il a recommencé à croitre régulièrement.

P.1258 - §5 (Le corps de réserve cosmique des citoyens d'Urantia ayant conscience de l'univers comprend présentement plus de mille mortels ayant, au sujet de la citoyenneté cosmique, une clairvoyance qui transcende de loin la sphère de leur demeure terrestre, mais il m'est interdit de révéler la vraie nature de la fonction de ce groupe exceptionnel d'êtres humains vivants.)

P.1258 - §6 Les Urantiens, qui subissent un isolement spirituel relatif de leur monde par rapport à certains circuits de l'univers local, ne devraient pas se laisser aller à éprouver un sentiment d'abandon cosmique ou d'orphelinage planétaire. Il existe, sur la planète, une supervision suprahumaine très précise et efficace des affaires du monde et des destinées humaines.

P.1258 - §7 Il est toutefois vrai qu'en mettant les choses au mieux, vous ne pouvez avoir qu'une faible idée d'un gouvernement planétaire idéal. Depuis les premiers temps du Prince Planétaire, Urantia a souffert de l'avortement du plan divin préparé pour sa croissance mondiale et son développement racial. Les mondes loyaux de Satania ne sont pas gouvernés comme Urantia. Néanmoins, par comparaison avec les autres mondes isolés, votre gouvernement planétaire ne fait pas si mauvaise figure ; on peut dire qu'il est pire sur un ou deux autres mondes seulement, et un peu meilleur sur quelques-uns, mais la majorité se trouve sur un pied d'égalité avec vous.

P.1259 - §1 Dans l'univers local, nul ne paraît savoir quand prendra fin le statut instable de votre administration planétaire. Les Melchizédeks de Nébadon sont enclins à croire qu'il se produira peu de changements dans le gouvernement et l'administration de la planète jusqu'à la seconde venue personnelle de Micaël sur Urantia. Il est indubitable qu'à ce moment-là, sinon auparavant, des changements radicaux seront effectués dans la direction de la planète. Quant à la nature de ces modifications dans l'administration du monde, personne ne paraît capable d'émettre même une hypothèse. Dans toute l'histoire des mondes habités de l'univers de Nébadon, il n'y a pas de précédent à un tel évènement. Parmi les nombreuses choses difficiles à comprendre concernant le futur gouvernement d'Urantia, l'une des plus importantes est l'installation sur la planète d'un circuit et d'un quartier général divisionnaire d'archanges.

P.1259 - §2 Votre monde isolé n'est pas oublié dans les conseils de l'univers. Urantia n'est pas une orpheline cosmique stigmatisée par le péché et coupée, par la rébellion, de la vigilante protection divine. Depuis Uversa jusqu'à Salvington, et ainsi de suite en descendant jusqu'à Jérusem, et même en montant vers Havona et le Paradis, tout le monde sait que nous sommes ici. 4. THE FOUR AND TWENTY COUNSELORS

At the center of the seven angelic residential circles on Jerusem is located the headquarters of the Urantia advisory council, the four and twenty counselors. John the Revelator called them the four and twenty elders: "And round about the throne were four and twenty seats, and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment." The throne in the center of this group is the judgment seat of the presiding archangel, the throne of the resurrection roll call of mercy and justice for all Satania. This judgment seat has always been on Jerusem, but the twenty-four surrounding seats were placed in position no more than nineteen hundred years ago, soon after Christ Michael was elevated to the full sovereignty of Nebadon. These four and twenty counselors are his personal agents on Jerusem, and they have authority to represent the Master Son in all matters concerning the roll calls of Satania and in many other phases of the scheme of mortal ascension on the isolated worlds of the system. They are the designated agents for executing the special requests of Gabriel and the unusual mandates of Michael.

These twenty-four counselors have been recruited from the eight Urantia races, and the last of this group were assembled at the time of the resurrection roll call of Michael, nineteen hundred years ago. This Urantia advisory council is made up of the following members:

1. Onagar, the master mind of the pre-Planetary Prince age, who directed his fellows in the worship of "The Breath Giver."

2. Mansant, the great teacher of the post-Planetary Prince age on Urantia, who pointed his fellows to the veneration of "The Great Light."

3. Onamonalonton, a far-distant leader of the red man and the one who directed this race from the worship of many gods to the veneration of "The Great Spirit."

4. Orlandof, a prince of the blue men and their leader in the recognition of the divinity of "The Supreme Chief."

5. Porshunta, the oracle of the extinct orange race and the leader of this people in the worship of "The Great Teacher."

6. Singlangton, the first of the yellow men to teach and lead his people in the worship of "One Truth" instead of many. Thousands of years ago the yellow man knew of the one God.

7. Fantad, the deliverer of the green men from darkness and their leader in the worship of "The One Source of Life."

8. Orvonon, the enlightener of the indigo races and their leader in the onetime service of "The God of Gods."

9. Adam, the discredited but rehabilitated planetary father of Urantia, a Material Son of God who was relegated to the likeness of mortal flesh, but who survived and was subsequently elevated to this position by the decree of Michael.

10. Eve, the mother of the violet race of Urantia, who suffered the penalty of default with her mate and was also rehabilitated with him and assigned to serve with this group of mortal survivors.

11. Enoch, the first of the mortals of Urantia to fuse with the Thought Adjuster during the mortal life in the flesh.

12. Moses, the emancipator of a remnant of the submerged violet race and the instigator of the revival of the worship of the Universal Father under the name of "The God of Israel."

13. Elijah, a translated soul of brilliant spiritual achievement during the post-Material Son age.

14. Machiventa Melchizedek, the only Son of this order to bestow himself upon the Urantia races. While still numbered as a Melchizedek, he has become "forever a minister of the Most Highs," eternally assuming the assignment of service as a mortal ascender, having sojourned on Urantia in the likeness of mortal flesh at Salem in the days of Abraham. This Melchizedek has latterly been proclaimed vicegerent Planetary Prince of Urantia with headquarters on Jerusem and authority to act in behalf of Michael, who is actually the Planetary Prince of the world whereon he experienced his terminal bestowal in human form. Notwithstanding this, Urantia is still supervised by successive resident governors general, members of the four and twenty counselors.

15. John the Baptist, the forerunner of Michael's mission on Urantia and, in the flesh, distant cousin of the Son of Man.

16. 1-2-3 the First, the leader of the loyal midway creatures in the service of Gabriel at the time of the Caligastia betrayal, elevated to this position by Michael soon after his entrance upon unconditioned sovereignty.

These selected personalities are exempt from the ascension regime for the time being, on Gabriel's request, and we have no idea how long they may serve in this capacity.

Seats numbers 17, 18, 19, and 20 are not permanently occupied. They are temporarily filled by the unanimous consent of the sixteen permanent members, being kept open for later assignment to ascending mortals from the present postbestowal Son age on Urantia.

Numbers 21, 22, 23, and 24 are likewise temporarily filled while being held in reserve for the great teachers of other and subsequent ages which undoubtedly will follow the present age. Eras of the Magisterial Sons and Teacher Sons and the ages of light and life are to be anticipated on Urantia, regardless of unexpected visitations of divine Sons which may or may not occur.

Lake Anjikuni Eskimo Village

In November 1930, a fur trapper named Joe Labelle made his way on snowshoes to an Eskimo village on the shores of Lake Anjikuni in northern Canada. Labelle was familiar with the village, which he knew as a thriving fishing community of about 1200 residents. When he arrived, however, the village was deserted. The shanties were covered with snow and not a chimney showed smoke. All of the huts and storehouses were vacant. There was no sound of sled dogs to be heard. The village’s kayaks tied up on the shore of the lake. In the shanties he found meals left hanging over fires, old and moldy and seemingly abandoned as they were being cooked. He found one smoldering fire on which there was a pot of blackened stew. The men’s rifles were still in place standing by the doors. Labelle then became frightened because he knew that the men would never leave without their weapons. He reported this discovery to the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police), who investigated what Labelle had seen, and turned up some bizarre findings. The police discovered that the town’s dogs had died of hunger, chained beneath a tree and covered by a snowdrift. Also, all of the Eskimos’ food and provisions were found undisturbed in their huts. What was even more disturbing was finding that the Eskimos’ ancestral graves had been emptied, despite the frozen ground, the graves had been opened and the dead removed. The case remains open to this day. The matter remains unsolved, and despite a search of all Canadian and worldwide inquiries, not one trace of the missing 1200 men, women and children has ever been found. The Inspector for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police returned today to confirm the disappearance of an Eskimo village in the Northern Lakes region. Ten days ago, fur trapper, Joe LaBelle, contacted the RCMP to report a chilling discovery. While running a trap line, LaBelle snow-shoed out to an isolated Eskimo village on the shores of Lake Anjikuni, only to discover every inhabitant—man, woman, and child—had vanished from their huts and storehouses. “It was as if every one of them poor folk up and took off with no more than the shirts on their backs.” Inspector Pierre Menard of the RCMP returned with his team’s findings today and confirmed the trapper’s story. The village had indeed been found abandoned under most strange circumstances. “In our search, we discovered undisturbed foodstuff, gear, and provisions but no sign of the villagers. Not a single footprint or track.” Even the Eskimos’ sled dogs were found buried under the snow, starved to death. But the most disturbing discovery of all was reported at the end: the Eskimos’ ancestral graves were found excavated and emptied. The RCMP promises to continue the search, but for now the fate of the villagers remains a mystery.

7. ANDITES OF THE MEDITERRANEAN ISLES

During the decline of culture in Mesopotamia there persisted for some time a superior civilization on the islands of the eastern Mediterranean.About 12,000 B.C. a brilliant tribe of Andites migrated to Crete. This was the only island settled so early by such a superior group, and it was almost two thousand years before the descendants of these mariners spread to the neighboring isles. This group were the narrow-headed, smaller-statured Andites who had intermarried with the Vanite division of the northern Nodites. They were all under six feet in height and had been literally driven off the mainland by their larger and inferior fellows. These emigrants to Crete were highly skilled in textiles, metals, pottery, plumbing, and the use of stone for building material. They engaged in writing and carried on as herders and agriculturists.Almost two thousand years after the settlement of Crete a group of the tall descendants of Adamson made their way over the northern islands to Greece, coming almost directly from their highland home north of Mesopotamia. These progenitors of the Greeks were led westward by Sato, a direct descendant of Adamson and Ratta.The group which finally settled in Greece consisted of three hundred and seventy-five of the selected and superior people comprising the end of the second civilization of the Adamsonites. These later sons of Adamson carried the then most valuable strains of the emerging white races. They were of a high intellectual order and, physically regarded, the most beautiful of men since the days of the first Eden.Presently Greece and the Aegean Islands region succeeded Mesopotamia and Egypt as the Occidental center of trade, art, and culture. But as it was in Egypt, so again practically all of the art and science of the Aegean world was derived from Mesopotamia except for the culture of the Adamsonite forerunners of the Greeks. All the art and genius of these latter people is a direct legacy of the posterity of Adamson, the first son of Adam and Eve, and his extraordinary second wife, a daughter descended in an unbroken line from the pure Nodite staff of Prince Caligastia. No wonder the Greeks had mythological traditions that they were directly descended from gods and superhuman beings.

The Aegean region passed through five distinct cultural stages, each less spiritual than the preceding, and erelong the last glorious era of art perished beneath the weight of the rapidly multiplying mediocre descendants of the Danubian slaves who had been imported by the later generations of Greeks.

It was during this age in Crete that the mother cult of the descendants of Cain attained its greatest vogue. This cult glorified Eve in the worship of the "great mother."

Images of Eve were everywhere. Thousands of public shrines were erected throughout Crete and Asia Minor. And this mother cult persisted on down to the times of Christ, becoming later incorporated in the early Christian religion under the guise of the glorification and worship of Mary the earth mother of Jesus.By about 6500 B.C. there had occurred a great decline in the spiritual heritage of the Andites. The descendants of Adam were widespreadly dispersed and had been virtually swallowed up in the older and more numerous human races. And this decadence of Andite civilization, together with the disappearance of

their religious standards, left the spiritually impoverished races of the world in a deplorable condition.By 5000 B.C. the three purest strains of Adam's descendants were in Sumeria, northern Europe, and Greece. The whole of Mesopotamia was being slowly deteriorated by the stream of mixed and darker races which filtered in from Arabia. And the coming of these inferior peoples contributed further to the scattering abroad of the biologic and cultural residue of the Andites. From all over the fertile crescent the more adventurous peoples poured westward to the islands. These migrants cultivated both grain and vegetables, and they brought domesticated animals with them.About 5000 B.C. a mighty host of progressive Mesopotamians moved out of the Euphrates valley and settled upon the island of Cyprus; this civilization was wiped out about two thousand years subsequently by the barbarian hordes from the north.Another great colony settled on the Mediterranean near the later site of Carthage. And from north Africa large numbers of Andites entered Spain and later mingled in Switzerland with their brethren who had earlier come to Italy from the Aegean Islands.When Egypt followed Mesopotamia in cultural decline, many of the more able and advanced families fled to Crete, thus greatly augmenting this already advanced civilization. And when the arrival of inferior groups from Egypt later threatened the civilization of Crete, the more cultured families moved on west to Greece.The Greeks were not only great teachers and artists, they were also the world's greatest traders and colonizers. Before succumbing to the flood of inferiority which eventually engulfed their art and commerce, they succeeded in planting so many outposts of culture to the west that a great many of the advances in early Greek civilization persisted in the later peoples of southern Europe, and many of the mixed descendants of these Adamsonites became incorporated in the tribes of the adjacent mainlands.

6. SERAPHIC ORGANIZATION

38:6.1After the second millennium of sojourn at seraphic headquarters the seraphim are organized under chiefs into groups of twelve (12 pairs, 24 seraphim), and twelve such groups constitute a company (144 pairs, 288 seraphim), which is commanded by a leader. Twelve companies under a commander constitute a battalion (1,728 pairs or 3,456 seraphim), and twelve battalions under a director equal a seraphic unit (20,736 pairs or 41,472 individuals), while twelve units, subject to the command of a supervisor, constitute a legion numbering 248,832 pairs or 497,664 individuals. Jesus alluded to such a group of angels that night in the garden of Gethsemane when he said: "I can even now ask my Father, and he will presently give me more than twelve legions of angels."

38:6.2 Twelve legions of angels comprise a host numbering 2,985,984 pairs or 5,971,968 individuals, and twelve such hosts (35,831,808 pairs or 71,663,616 individuals) make up the largest operating organization of seraphim, an angelic army. A seraphic host is commanded by an archangel or by some other personality of co-ordinate status, while the angelic armies are directed by the Brilliant Evening Stars or by other immediate lieutenants of Gabriel. And Gabriel is the "supreme commander of the armies of heaven," the chief executive of the Sovereign of Nebadon, "the Lord God of hosts."

38:6.3 Though serving under the direct supervision of the Infinite Spirit as personalized on Salvington, since the bestowal of Michael on Urantia, seraphim and all other local universe orders have become subject to the sovereignty of the Master Son. Even when Michael was born of the flesh on Urantia, there issued the superuniverse broadcast to all Nebadon which proclaimed, "And let all the angels worship him." All ranks of angels are subject to his sovereignty; they are a part of that group which has been denominated "his mighty angels."

3. The Urmia Lectures

(1485.3)

134:3.1 On the way to the Caspian Sea, Jesus had stopped several days for rest and recuperation at the old Persian city of Urmia on the western shores of Lake Urmia. On the largest of a group of islands situated a short distance offshore near Urmia was located a large building — a lecture amphitheater — dedicated to the “spirit of religion.” This structure was really a temple of the philosophy of religions.

(1485.4) 134:3.2 This temple of religion had been built by a wealthy merchant citizen of Urmia and his three sons. This man was Cymboyton, and he numbered among his ancestors many diverse peoples.

(1485.5) 134:3.3 The lectures and discussions in this school of religion began at ten o’clock every morning in the week. The afternoon sessions started at three o’clock, and the evening debates opened at eight o’clock. Cymboyton or one of his three sons always presided at these sessions of teaching, discussion, and debate. The founder of this unique school of religions lived and died without ever revealing his personal religious beliefs. *

(1485.6) 134:3.4 On several occasions Jesus participated in these discussions, and before he left Urmia, Cymboyton arranged with Jesus to sojourn with them for two weeks on his return trip and give twenty-four lectures on “The Brotherhood of Men,” and to conduct twelve evening sessions of questions, discussions, and debates on his lectures in particular and on the brotherhood of men in general.

(1485.7) 134:3.5 In accordance with this arrangement, Jesus stopped off on the return trip and delivered these lectures. This was the most systematic and formal of all the Master’s teaching on Urantia. Never before or after did he say so much on one subject as was contained in these lectures and discussions on the brotherhood of men. In reality these lectures were on the “Kingdom of God” and the “Kingdoms of Men.”

(1486.1) 134:3.6 More than thirty religions and religious cults were represented on the faculty of this temple of religious philosophy. These teachers were chosen, supported, and fully accredited by their respective religious groups. At this time there were about seventy-five teachers on the faculty, and they lived in cottages each accommodating about a dozen persons. Every new moon these groups were changed by the casting of lots. Intolerance, a contentious spirit, or any other disposition to interfere with the smooth running of the community would bring about the prompt and summary dismissal of the offending teacher. He would be unceremoniously dismissed, and his alternate in waiting would be immediately installed in his place.

(1486.2) 134:3.7 These teachers of the various religions made a great effort to show how similar their religions were in regard to the fundamental things of this life and the next. There was but one doctrine which had to be accepted in order to gain a seat on this faculty — every teacher must represent a religion which recognized God — some sort of supreme Deity. There were five independent teachers on the faculty who did not represent any organized religion, and it was as such an independent teacher that Jesus appeared before them.

(1486.3) 134:3.8 [When we, the midwayers, first prepared the summary of Jesus’ teachings at Urmia, there arose a disagreement between the seraphim of the churches and the seraphim of progress as to the wisdom of including these teachings in the Urantia Revelation. Conditions of the twentieth century, prevailing in both religion and human governments, are so different from those prevailing in Jesus’ day that it was indeed difficult to adapt the Master’s teachings at Urmia to the problems of the kingdom of God and the kingdoms of men as these world functions are existent in the twentieth century. We were never able to formulate a statement of the Master’s teachings which was acceptable to both groups of these seraphim of planetary government. Finally, the Melchizedek chairman of the revelatory commission appointed a commission of three of our number to prepare our view of the Master’s Urmia teachings as adapted to twentieth-century religious and political conditions on Urantia. Accordingly, we three secondary midwayers completed such an adaptation of Jesus’ teachings, restating his pronouncements as we would apply them to present-day world conditions, and we now present these statements as they stand after having been edited by the Melchizedek chairman of the revelatory commission.]

4. Sovereignty — Divine and Human

(1486.4) 134:4.1 The brotherhood of men is founded on the fatherhood of God. The family of God is derived from the love of God — God is love. God the Father divinely loves his children, all of them.

(1486.5) 134:4.2 The kingdom of heaven, the divine government, is founded on the fact of divine sovereignty — God is spirit. Since God is spirit, this kingdom is spiritual. The kingdom of heaven is neither material nor merely intellectual; it is a spiritual relationship between God and man.

(1486.6) 134:4.3 If different religions recognize the spirit sovereignty of God the Father, then will all such religions remain at peace. Only when one religion assumes that it is in some way superior to all others, and that it possesses exclusive authority over other religions, will such a religion presume to be intolerant of other religions or dare to persecute other religious believers.

(1487.1) 134:4.4 Religious peace — brotherhood — can never exist unless all religions are willing to completely divest themselves of all ecclesiastical authority and fully surrender all concept of spiritual sovereignty. God alone is spirit sovereign.

(1487.2) 134:4.5 You cannot have equality among religions (religious liberty) without having religious wars unless all religions consent to the transfer of all religious sovereignty to some superhuman level, to God himself.

(1487.3) 134:4.6 The kingdom of heaven in the hearts of men will create religious unity (not necessarily uniformity) because any and all religious groups composed of such religious believers will be free from all notions of ecclesiastical authority — religious sovereignty.

(1487.4) 134:4.7 God is spirit, and God gives a fragment of his spirit self to dwell in the heart of man. Spiritually, all men are equal. The kingdom of heaven is free from castes, classes, social levels, and economic groups. You are all brethren.

(1487.5) 134:4.8 But the moment you lose sight of the spirit sovereignty of God the Father, some one religion will begin to assert its superiority over other religions; and then, instead of peace on earth and good will among men, there will start dissensions, recriminations, even religious wars, at least wars among religionists.

(1487.6) 134:4.9 Freewill beings who regard themselves as equals, unless they mutually acknowledge themselves as subject to some supersovereignty, some authority over and above themselves, sooner or later are tempted to try out their ability to gain power and authority over other persons and groups. The concept of equality never brings peace except in the mutual recognition of some overcontrolling influence of supersovereignty.

(1487.7) 134:4.10 The Urmia religionists lived together in comparative peace and tranquillity because they had fully surrendered all their notions of religious sovereignty. Spiritually, they all believed in a sovereign God; socially, full and unchallengeable authority rested in their presiding head — Cymboyton. They well knew what would happen to any teacher who assumed to lord it over his fellow teachers. There can be no lasting religious peace on Urantia until all religious groups freely surrender all their notions of divine favor, chosen people, and religious sovereignty. Only when God the Father becomes supreme will men become religious brothers and live together in religious peace on earth.

5. Political Sovereignty

(1487.8) 134:5.1 [While the Master’s teaching concerning the sovereignty of God is a truth — only complicated by the subsequent appearance of the religion about him among the world’s religions — his presentations concerning political sovereignty are vastly complicated by the political evolution of nation life during the last nineteen hundred years and more. In the times of Jesus there were only two great world powers — the Roman Empire in the West and the Han Empire in the East — and these were widely separated by the Parthian kingdom and other intervening lands of the Caspian and Turkestan regions. We have, therefore, in the following presentation departed more widely from the substance of the Master’s teachings at Urmia concerning political sovereignty, at the same time attempting to depict the import of such teachings as they are applicable to the peculiarly critical stage of the evolution of political sovereignty in the twentieth century after Christ.]

(1487.9) 134:5.2 War on Urantia will never end so long as nations cling to the illusive notions of unlimited national sovereignty. There are only two levels of relative sovereignty on an inhabited world: the spiritual free will of the individual mortal and the collective sovereignty of mankind as a whole. Between the level of the individual human being and the level of the total of mankind, all groupings and associations are relative, transitory, and of value only in so far as they enhance the welfare, well-being, and progress of the individual and the planetary grand total — man and mankind.

(1488.1) 134:5.3 Religious teachers must always remember that the spiritual sovereignty of God overrides all intervening and intermediate spiritual loyalties. Someday civil rulers will learn that the Most Highs rule in the kingdoms of men.

(1488.2) 134:5.4 This rule of the Most Highs in the kingdoms of men is not for the especial benefit of any especially favored group of mortals. There is no such thing as a “chosen people.” The rule of the Most Highs, the overcontrollers of political evolution, is a rule designed to foster the greatest good to the greatest number of all men and for the greatest length of time.

(1488.3) 134:5.5 Sovereignty is power and it grows by organization. This growth of the organization of political power is good and proper, for it tends to encompass ever-widening segments of the total of mankind. But this same growth of political organizations creates a problem at every intervening stage between the initial and natural organization of political power — the family — and the final consummation of political growth — the government of all mankind, by all mankind, and for all mankind.

(1488.4) 134:5.6 Starting out with parental power in the family group, political sovereignty evolves by organization as families overlap into consanguineous clans which become united, for various reasons, into tribal units — superconsanguineous political groupings. And then, by trade, commerce, and conquest, tribes become unified as a nation, while nations themselves sometimes become unified by empire.

(1488.5) 134:5.7 As sovereignty passes from smaller groups to larger groups, wars are lessened. That is, minor wars between smaller nations are lessened, but the potential for greater wars is increased as the nations wielding sovereignty become larger and larger. Presently, when all the world has been explored and occupied, when nations are few, strong, and powerful, when these great and supposedly sovereign nations come to touch borders, when only oceans separate them, then will the stage be set for major wars, world-wide conflicts. So-called sovereign nations cannot rub elbows without generating conflicts and eventuating wars.

(1488.6) 134:5.8 The difficulty in the evolution of political sovereignty from the family to all mankind, lies in the inertia-resistance exhibited on all intervening levels. Families have, on occasion, defied their clan, while clans and tribes have often been subversive of the sovereignty of the territorial state. Each new and forward evolution of political sovereignty is (and has always been) embarrassed and hampered by the “scaffolding stages” of the previous developments in political organization. And this is true because human loyalties, once mobilized, are hard to change. The same loyalty which makes possible the evolution of the tribe, makes difficult the evolution of the supertribe — the territorial state. And the same loyalty (patriotism) which makes possible the evolution of the territorial state, vastly complicates the evolutionary development of the government of all mankind.

(1488.7) 134:5.9 Political sovereignty is created out of the surrender of self-determinism, first by the individual within the family and then by the families and clans in relation to the tribe and larger groupings. This progressive transfer of self-determination from the smaller to ever larger political organizations has generally proceeded unabated in the East since the establishment of the Ming and the Mogul dynasties. In the West it obtained for more than a thousand years right on down to the end of the World War, when an unfortunate retrograde movement temporarily reversed this normal trend by re-establishing the submerged political sovereignty of numerous small groups in Europe.

(1489.1) 134:5.10 Urantia will not enjoy lasting peace until the so-called sovereign nations intelligently and fully surrender their sovereign powers into the hands of the brotherhood of men — mankind government. Internationalism — Leagues of Nations — can never bring permanent peace to mankind. World-wide confederations of nations will effectively prevent minor wars and acceptably control the smaller nations, but they will not prevent world wars nor control the three, four, or five most powerful governments. In the face of real conflicts, one of these world powers will withdraw from the League and declare war. You cannot prevent nations going to war as long as they remain infected with the delusional virus of national sovereignty. Internationalism is a step in the right direction. An international police force will prevent many minor wars, but it will not be effective in preventing major wars, conflicts between the great military governments of earth.

(1489.2) 134:5.11 As the number of truly sovereign nations (great powers) decreases, so do both opportunity and need for mankind government increase. When there are only a few really sovereign (great) powers, either they must embark on the life and death struggle for national (imperial) supremacy, or else, by voluntary surrender of certain prerogatives of sovereignty, they must create the essential nucleus of supernational power which will serve as the beginning of the real sovereignty of all mankind.

(1489.3) 134:5.12 Peace will not come to Urantia until every so-called sovereign nation surrenders its power to make war into the hands of a representative government of all mankind. Political sovereignty is innate with the peoples of the world. When all the peoples of Urantia create a world government, they have the right and the power to make such a government SOVEREIGN; and when such a representative or democratic world power controls the world’s land, air, and naval forces, peace on earth and good will among men can prevail — but not until then.

(1489.4) 134:5.13 To use an important nineteenth- and twentieth-century illustration: The forty-eight states of the American Federal Union have long enjoyed peace. They have no more wars among themselves. They have surrendered their sovereignty to the federal government, and through the arbitrament of war, they have abandoned all claims to the delusions of self-determination. While each state regulates its internal affairs, it is not concerned with foreign relations, tariffs, immigration, military affairs, or interstate commerce. Neither do the individual states concern themselves with matters of citizenship. The forty-eight states suffer the ravages of war only when the federal government’s sovereignty is in some way jeopardized.

(1489.5) 134:5.14 These forty-eight states, having abandoned the twin sophistries of sovereignty and self-determination, enjoy interstate peace and tranquillity. So will the nations of Urantia begin to enjoy peace when they freely surrender their respective sovereignties into the hands of a global government — the sovereignty of the brotherhood of men. In this world state the small nations will be as powerful as the great, even as the small state of Rhode Island has its two senators in the American Congress just the same as the populous state of New York or the large state of Texas.

(1490.1) 134:5.15 The limited (state) sovereignty of these forty-eight states was created by men and for men. The superstate (national) sovereignty of the American Federal Union was created by the original thirteen of these states for their own benefit and for the benefit of men. Sometime the supernational sovereignty of the planetary government of mankind will be similarly created by nations for their own benefit and for the benefit of all men.

(1490.2) 134:5.16 Citizens are not born for the benefit of governments; governments are organizations created and devised for the benefit of men. There can be no end to the evolution of political sovereignty short of the appearance of the government of the sovereignty of all men. All other sovereignties are relative in value, intermediate in meaning, and subordinate in status.

(1490.3) 134:5.17 With scientific progress, wars are going to become more and more devastating until they become almost racially suicidal. How many world wars must be fought and how many leagues of nations must fail before men will be willing to establish the government of mankind and begin to enjoy the blessings of permanent peace and thrive on the tranquillity of good will — world-wide good will — among men?

6. Law, Liberty, and Sovereignty

(1490.4) 134:6.1 If one man craves freedom — liberty — he must remember that all other men long for the same freedom. Groups of such liberty-loving mortals cannot live together in peace without becoming subservient to such laws, rules, and regulations as will grant each person the same degree of freedom while at the same time safeguarding an equal degree of freedom for all of his fellow mortals. If one man is to be absolutely free, then another must become an absolute slave. And the relative nature of freedom is true socially, economically, and politically. Freedom is the gift of civilization made possible by the enforcement of LAW.

(1490.5) 134:6.2 Religion makes it spiritually possible to realize the brotherhood of men, but it will require mankind government to regulate the social, economic, and political problems associated with such a goal of human happiness and efficiency.

(1490.6) 134:6.3 There shall be wars and rumors of wars — nation will rise against nation — just as long as the world’s political sovereignty is divided up and unjustly held by a group of nation-states. England, Scotland, and Wales were always fighting each other until they gave up their respective sovereignties, reposing them in the United Kingdom.

(1490.7) 134:6.4 Another world war will teach the so-called sovereign nations to form some sort of federation, thus creating the machinery for preventing small wars, wars between the lesser nations. But global wars will go on until the government of mankind is created. Global sovereignty will prevent global wars — nothing else can.

(1490.8) 134:6.5 The forty-eight American free states live together in peace. There are among the citizens of these forty-eight states all of the various nationalities and races that live in the ever-warring nations of Europe. These Americans represent almost all the religions and religious sects and cults of the whole wide world, and yet here in North America they live together in peace. And all this is made possible because these forty-eight states have surrendered their sovereignty and have abandoned all notions of the supposed rights of self-determination.

(1490.9) 134:6.6 It is not a question of armaments or disarmament. Neither does the question of conscription or voluntary military service enter into these problems of maintaining world-wide peace. If you take every form of modern mechanical armaments and all types of explosives away from strong nations, they will fight with fists, stones, and clubs as long as they cling to their delusions of the divine right of national sovereignty.

(1491.1) 134:6.7 War is not man’s great and terrible disease; war is a symptom, a result. The real disease is the virus of national sovereignty.

(1491.2) 134:6.8 Urantia nations have not possessed real sovereignty; they never have had a sovereignty which could protect them from the ravages and devastations of world wars. In the creation of the global government of mankind, the nations are not giving up sovereignty so much as they are actually creating a real, bona fide, and lasting world sovereignty which will henceforth be fully able to protect them from all war. Local affairs will be handled by local governments; national affairs, by national governments; international affairs will be administered by global government.

(1491.3) 134:6.9 World peace cannot be maintained by treaties, diplomacy, foreign policies, alliances, balances of power, or any other type of makeshift juggling with the sovereignties of nationalism. World law must come into being and must be enforced by world government — the sovereignty of all mankind.

(1491.4) 134:6.10 The individual will enjoy far more liberty under world government. Today, the citizens of the great powers are taxed, regulated, and controlled almost oppressively, and much of this present interference with individual liberties will vanish when the national governments are willing to trustee their sovereignty as regards international affairs into the hands of global government.

(1491.5) 134:6.11 Under global government the national groups will be afforded a real opportunity to realize and enjoy the personal liberties of genuine democracy. The fallacy of self-determination will be ended. With global regulation of money and trade will come the new era of world-wide peace. Soon may a global language evolve, and there will be at least some hope of sometime having a global religion — or religions with a global viewpoint.

(1491.6) 134:6.12 Collective security will never afford peace until the collectivity includes all mankind.

(1491.7) 134:6.13 The political sovereignty of representative mankind government will bring lasting peace on earth, and the spiritual brotherhood of man will forever insure good will among all men. And there is no other way whereby peace on earth and good will among men can be realized.

(1491.8) 134:6.14 After the death of Cymboyton, his sons encountered great difficulties in maintaining a peaceful faculty. The repercussions of Jesus’ teachings would have been much greater if the later Christian teachers who joined the Urmia faculty had exhibited more wisdom and exercised more tolerance.

(1491.9) 134:6.15 Cymboyton’s eldest son had appealed to Abner at Philadelphia for help, but Abner’s choice of teachers was most unfortunate in that they turned out to be unyielding and uncompromising. These teachers sought to make their religion dominant over the other beliefs. They never suspected that the oft-referred-to lectures of the caravan conductor had been delivered by Jesus himself.

(1491.10) 134:6.16 As confusion increased in the faculty, the three brothers withdrew their financial support, and after five years the school closed. Later it was reopened as a Mithraic temple and eventually burned down in connection with one of their orgiastic celebrations.
